That is not a new thing to Caseys, there are 2 stores that have been built in the last year that have peaked shingle roofs. I have worked with the General Contractor that built them. They are the new Caseys concept stores. But the canopy roof would be crazy to have a peak and shingles.

The Ames city staff showed a photo of the type of peaked canopy that they want - I believe it was at a convenience store in a Minneapolis suburb. The roof was huge.

I would have liked to have been there when a certain member of the ZBA made his points. Crazy man.

Care to divulge who you're referring to? I know someone on the ZBA, wondering if its the same person.

Also, I'm curious what the answer was to the question about Fareway having a flat roof. I get zoning laws and uniformity and all that, but the way these nuts are scrutinizing every effin' proposal is out of control. Worse than even I thought it could get.

If the dude you know is crazy, then it's him. Otherwise, it isn't the guy you know.

Edit: I'm sure a peaked roof on the canopy would make it blend in with residences. Hell, I may even get that confused for my own house and walk in and ask where dinner is. Maybe call the cops because I can't find my kids.

Flat roofs are actaully allowed in this zone as long as they have parapets of varying height. That's how Fareway did it.

I've heard that the city gave Casey's so much grief with the LW store that they are really fighting with the city on this one. I think that the store will happen no matter what because the vast amount of customers in the area with no competition for them. But Casey's is going to give them a battle first.

I survived for years with a detached garage. It is not that hard, just hike up your skirt and walk through the snow.

Did you custom build that home? Was it one that would be a $300k house today built new? I understand that not all garages are attached. However, if I am building a new home (as we just completed just outside the reaches of the Ames and Story county zoning folks) it is darn well going to have an attached garage.

Don't see why Ames has to make this so difficult. It's a needed store for people who live in that area.

As Larry the Cable guy says: Just "Git R' Done!"

It'll be pretty funny if all new development goes up West of R-38 (500th St) in Boone County in the next coming years. Maybe a new town could be formed out there called 'West Ames' or something like that.

Anyone here if there is going to be a new Casey's store on the corner of Bloomington and Stange? Was talking to my neighbor last night and he said he heard that it was a done deal and it was going to be built. Anyone else hear the same thing or is he full of crap?

Living in North Ames it would be nice to have an another Gas Station nearby.

If it does happen it will become the busiest station in town. They've needed one up there for a long time

Caseys should buy land from ISU at 13th and Stange (NE Corner) to build a 2nd gas station. There are no gas stations to the west in Ontario, up north in Somerset, or by Ames (proper) even.

What was funny is we signed the paperwork on 6/22 to begin the project with a builder who does a ton of work in Ames (3 letter firm) and at that meeting I asked when we would break ground.

One of the guys there said it would probably be a few weeks to get the permit, I called Boone county while still in that meeting and the folks at plannign and development filled the permit form out over the phone for me, told me to brign a check and pick it up in the morning.

The whole project they have been blown away by how reasonable Boone County has been. We got the house started 6/24 and moved in 9/18.

Not bad.
