New BB Coaches

Mike DeCourcey of the Sporting News graded the new college bb hires as follows:
Oklahoma-Capel: C
Cincy-Cronin: B
Arizona State-Sendek: B
UAB-Davis: B-
Kansas State-Huggins: A-
Iowa State-McDermott: B+
And he had this to say about McDermott Surest bet: Iowa State, Greg McDermott. McDermott has been in Iowa longer than corn. He runs sophisticated offenses and defenses that enabled teams at Northern Iowa to compete with high-major opponents. As long as there are enough solid players in the region, McDermott will succeed. Grade: B+

Speaking of posts/comments, Tom Shatel of Omaha World Herald, when Dan visited Council Bluffs this week at a banquet, commented, "Dan McCarney is the most optimistic of all in the crazy world of coaches. He can be having a bad season, but always makes his players feel good about themselves. When others sees clouds, he see light" Not bad. I would rather have a positive coach for my school than a "puckered mouth."

I might add that Tom didn't see Dan after the bowl game in the locker room. The guys didn't come out of the locker room feeling good about themselves after that. And I'm not trying to make the guy look bad, just saying that he doesn't baby the players or anything, he can chew his players out with the best of them and I'm glad he can both be a positive guy and a hard@$$.
