My theory on why the Big 12 isn't getting respect from the playoff committee

Perfect example 3 loss Alabama. 2 of those losses to 6-6 schools. 9 power conference opponents. ISU 2 losses. 10 power conference opponents. Alabama ranked higher. 3 loss Mississippi and South Carolina also ranked higher than any Big 12 school.

SEC and Big 10 are threatening to bolt from the NCAA and form their own entity if they don't get their way. I say the same thing to that that I said about Texas threatening to leave the Big 12. If you want to leave then leave. Sooner rather than later. Leave. Go away.

Said this in another thread... its because the perceived top of the conference sucked.

Utah, Kansas, Okie State, all trash. So its a by-product of pre season expectations.

People expect Ohio State and Alabama to be good . Expected them to be good, etc... so when they lose, they are given the benefit of the doubt.

Two teams picked in the bottom of the Big 12 finished top 3 and 2 more picked mid-tier finished tied for 1st and top 4. So because of that the lazy idea is that the conference is not good.

As an example, look at the ACC. Miami fell to 12, but only after a second loss, people expected them to be good.

SMU, was thought of as a dark horse title contender, so they are top 10 despite not beating anyone. And Clemson who has 3 losses and isn't great but sttill ranked.

The same would be true for the Big 12 if Utah had gone 10-2 instead of Arizona State.

Pre-season rankings are dumb but that is the basis for the majority of the bias

I think it’s silly to complain that a 3 loss SEC team is ranked a couple spots above ISU and ASU. Hate to break it to you, but the SEC is a tougher football conference.

By the same token, every year we see Big 12 basketball teams with more losses ranked above other P5 teams, seeded higher, more tournament spots, etc.

One 3 loss team? Fine, that's fair. Three 3 loss teams above every single Big 12 team that has 2 losses? Yeah, okay.

The reason is because the teams picked to be good in July turned out to be bad or average. If Utah, K-State, OSU or Kanas were 10-2, they would be ranked in the top 10.
Exactly! Were they really supposed to be that good? Or was it inflated to create the illusion there aren't any B12 schools that stand out. It's not only fun to be a conspiracist, they also make it so easy!
Of course, they don't want to admit that the rest of the B12 is just that good. That'd be a blemish on their impeccable record (sarcasm).

the big 10 and SEC have disproportionate representation on the committee. the deck is stacked at every level for those conferences.
The problem this year is that there is more G5 and ACC representation than Big XII representation. SEC and B1G stuff is not as much of a factor IMO.

Hopefully, ISU wins the Big XII CCG and goes balls to the wall in the CFP Game @ B1G / SEC / Notre Dame.

If Arizona State wins the CCG, I will root for them to do well in the CFP. However, after the Big XII rep is out, I really don't give a crap.

Personally, I love the new Big XII and think it is on the right side of CFB going forward. I saw let the SEC and B1G move on, shed some of their teams which might find a home in the Big XII / ACC / Pac-12 / MWC / AAC, etc. and move on!

The MAJORITY of schools are more like Iowa State than Ohio State, and if the SEC-B1G break-away (and shed some teams), CFB would be better off IMO.

Let's Go State!
Fork 'em Cyclones!

Conference championships have provided teams with a big boost in previous CFP rankings. I have very little respect for what this year's committee has done so far (largely ignoring SOS). But maybe they will still give the Big 12 winner the boost they deserve. We will find out on Sunday.

Thinking the stacks of cash are wrapped with an SEC and B1G label that the committee people get delivered to their houses every week.

Like @AlaCyclone said, the committed is heavier on ACC/G5 reps this year. There are some former Big 12 folks in there though.

My problem is not so much with Alabama but Boise. And I think you can be consistent and say that if SOR/SOS really matters, then both the Big 12 champ and Bama should be above Boise while Boise still deserves to be in.

But yes the root cause is having preseason and early season rankings without having 1) schedule parity and 2) enough games to correct for it. College basketball has enough games. The NFL has schedule parity.

The "playoffs" aren't being used the correct way obviously. They are still being used to determine conf standings in the SEC. 16 teams playing only 8 games is ridiculous.
