According to Iowa State's fact book (media guide) the Cyclones tied 46 games.

Against Marquette in 1951, Cyclone George Hess had 601 punting yards, were outgained 240-5, had 47 rushes for five yards, attempted zero passes and recorded one first down against Marquette in 1951.

Iowa State led 6-0 at half thanks to Bob Rohwedder's 42 yard pick six.

A 73 yard pass to Hilltopper freshman Ron Drzewiecki (drafted 11th overall in the 1955 NFL Draft) with about three minutes left tied the game at 6.

Speaking of ties, I have noticed that the lesser TV networks have forgotten that ties were once a thing. Specifically, during the Kansas broadcast last year:

"Welcome to the 98th meeting between Iowa State and Kansas."

No, it was the 104th meeting. There have been six ties. The network simply added wins and losses to derive how many times the teams have played.

Honorable mention for the Oklahoma game in 1981.
Season started out well (3-0-1) including this game.
But then in typical nut-cup fashion we lose to San Diego State 52-31
Won the next 2 Big 8 games so it seemed like a fluke... hopes re-kindled.
Then lost the last 4 games to again require nut cup.

You youngsters need to understand the dozens of times ISU seemed on the verge back in the day. Only to get hopes dashed. The scars are deep.

Alex Giffords missed a chip shot FG, something like 26 yards, to win the game at the end. And Giffords is one of the best ISU kickers in my lifetime. The Iowa State kicking game has been such a let down so many times.

I remember listening to that game with Pete Taylor and Eric Heft as a kid, and thinking, we are going to beat OU on the road. They were top five, I think. Then the shank FG that started the many misses at the end of games to come for about 20 plus years. A 7-7 tie was disappointing after that miss.

That's why konrardy's kick to beat Iowa last year has to be the most clutch kick by an ISU kicker in my lifetime. Considering the time left, distance, rivalry game on the road etc.

Yes, making a 54 yarder that was probably good by 15 is highly unusual with the past kicking wounds.

I think ISU football has changed.

Most painful.
I remember listening to that game on the radio. Nebraska was the national champ the previous two years. George Amundson drives the Clones like 80 yards in the last minute or so and they score to tie the game. Fans stormed the field, so it took them a while to attempt the extra point.

In my days of interviewing Iowa State athletes and coaches, two people from the sideline that day shared their take on the missed PAT:

"...we missed the extra point, it would’ve been one of the greatest victories of Iowa State," head coach Johnny Majors said.

“I think it was 23 seconds left on the clock and we scored, tied it up, fans emptied out of the stadium and they were all on the field, they took a few minutes to clear the field. I’m sitting there and I was praying,” linebacker Ted Jornov said with a laugh. “Goedjen was walking back and forth and he shanked the freakin’ kick off to the side. The fans still tore the stadium down. We were in the locker room showering and fans were out there pounding, it was a glorious day but we should’ve beat them. You can’t fault him (Goedjen) too much because he did win some games for us, you gotta look at from both sides.”

The 1991 6-6 tie with Oklahoma State is the only one I have seen in person, so it gets my vote. Yikes! That was an awful game on a chilly, wet, dreary day @ Cyclone Stadiium.

The highlight of the day for me was watching the Cyclone cheer/mascot squad run Pistol Pete crotch first into the goal posts. My first Cyclone game, it's amazing I ever went back.
