My brother got his kids one and now my kids *have* to have one. So, before I pull the trigger, a couple questions:

1. Do they play DVDs?
2. What are the chances there will be a new version coming out soon? I don't want to buy one this year and then next year they come out with something better. Obviously, with technology you're always going to run into that but is there a Wii 2.0 in the works now?
3. Are there any "learning" games for pre-k children?

It doesn't play DVDs.

It's gone through year one, meaning it's going to have about 4 years left in it before the "latest and greatest" comes along. Most consoles tend to follow this sort of pattern to offer developers some sort of stability so that they're not developing one game for multiple platforms with varying technology.

I'm not sure what games it has for learning, but I know that there is an overabundance of games geared for kids aged 6 and younger.

Heh, my 3 year old loves to play mario galaxy and try to catch the bunnies. We don't have any "learning" games yet. But it does teach them coordination. He just really likes to play bowling with dad.

Or does dad like to play bowling with him...
I got my mom and dad one for their anniversary, and everytime I call them they are playing it. This system is not just for children, its for all ages.

Ohh yeah, I love it when he yells at me the first thing when I get home from work that he has been waiting all day to play bowling with me.

I'm a nomad.
If you don't mind paying about $100 more than their retail price there are a ton of them on ebay to buy. Other than that, just call all the major stores (Target, Circuit City, Bestbuy) and ask when they will be getting their next shipment of Wii's in and then plan on getting to that store around 5am.
