We've renting a house and I have an area with rose bushes that is overrun with dandelions as well. Should I dig these up one by one, or how can I get ride of the dandelions without affecting the rose bushes? Also, how can I keep them from coming back in the no-grass soil?

Thanks!

You should be able to spray them with 2,4,D w/o hurting the roses. If not, mix up the spray and apply it to the weeds with a foam brush.

Sorry.... Keep the 2,4-d away IMO. You'll only make that mistake once. It moves.

Spot spray glyphosate (round up) it won't kill woody material and it won't move.

Lay down a black water penetrantable weed barrier.

Kill the dandelions now or you can wait until summer and see if the roses attract Japanese beetles. If you get beetles, you may want to get rid of the rose bushes. Beetles love certain rose colors, like red and yellow. Then they burrow into the lawn and you have more problems.

agreed on the glyphosate spot spray. i use a little paint brush in areas like you describe.

forget weed barrier - weeds can establish on top of it, and the material never goes away and it makes it harder to work around your roses.

just clean it up, and then maintain. roses need a lot of tlc anyway, so if you are doing it right, you'll be there a lot working them anyway. roses are big eaters - so get a 6 week fertilizing plan.

you might try a systemic feeder/insecticide/fungicide for feeding #1 if you haven't fed for the 1st time this year yet. regarding japanese beetles - i wouldn't remove your rose bushes just because of the beetle - but it will require more work if the beetles are around like they were last year.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about going out there like you're trying to fight a fire. I'm talking about spot spraying each weed.

I'm not exactly a landscaper, but I've been known to do a little trimming around the old oak tree from time to time.

Hope this helps

I understand - and you're correct that it will kill dandelions, but I've made this mistake. Thus I will never place a phenoxy within eyesight of flowers or grapes. Personal philosiphy. Only exception is late in the fall (best time to kill dandelions) when everything has froze off.

Okay I'll carefully use the Glyphosate, happen to have that on hand.

I'm in Utah so no beetle worries yet, just learning on the rose maintenance thing, they seem to have done well with limited care but now that we've moved in I plan on spending some time on them, hopefully anyways.

Thanks for the input!

My wife kills dandelions in our yard by individually spraying them with common table vinegar. She does it so I will not pick them and make wine out of them.
