Medical Redshirts

I’ve heard CW mention a couple of times guys like Bacon being able to preserve his medical redshirt as there is only one game left.
It was my understanding that to get a medical redshirt, the injury had to be season ending meaning no more games after the halfway point. And thought post season counted towards that.
Can he still get a medical redshirt?

His redshirt freshman year was 2021 season, so isn't that his Covid mulligan.

So is CW saying Bacon can play against Miami and 2024 would qualify as a normal redshirt, since the Bowl games don't count against the 4 redshirt game limit. And then Bacon is still eligible for 2025 & 2026 seasons?

It would seem by 2026 Bacon would either figure out he has an NFL future or its time to join the working world.

I have no clue what CW said. But

A. Caleb has used his redshirt, and thus cannot redshirt again.

B. Medical Hardship game play limits only apply to the first half of the season. While someone like Caleb could indeed play one game and still qualify for the hardship year, that one game can’t be any time past the first half.

Hardship and a redshirt are not the same animal.

The guys who only played four games (or less) can play all the postseason they want, and still maintain their redshirts.

The hardship? To quote:

In very general terms, to qualify for a Medical Hardship Waiver, an athlete can’t participate in more than 30% of the number of games or “dates of competition” in their regular season and can’t appear in a game after the midpoint of their season.”

So given this, if Bacon Appears in the bowl game he burns his ability to medical redshirt this year.

With NIL money- he would be part of the "Working World" while still playing football for ISU in 2026.

Yes but doesn't he still have a covid year available, or did he start his career the year after covid? I'm sure he can figure out a way to get a 6th year if he wanted to, with the way things are now. Hell, you see some guys playing for 7 or 8 years.

He redshirted the Covid year so that would count as his Covid year.

Isn't that your judgment rather than his? Yep, this is a message site, even so I don't think - imho - we should preclude what a young man might decide for himself.

My impression, which easily could be wrong: Isn't the 2020 season the only covid year exception? That is, the kid would have to be enrolled that semester?

Yes. And Caleb enrolled in ‘21. The COVID exception does not apply.

Which is why we’re talking medical hardship rules. And he wouldn’t be able to play in the Bowl and get one.
