Does anyone get the load speeds that they advertise?

I test my speed with one of those speed check websites, and mine is continually slower than it should be. Way slower. Is this expected or commonly experienced with this company?

Central Iowa.

You should be getting something close to the advertised speeds. I have the 8mb service and always get between 7 and 8 mb. If it is as you say there is a problem with your connection, call mediacom and have them come fix it.

How reliable are the speed tester websites? I just used 3. One said over 11MB, one said 9, and one said less than 2 MB

I actually get more than I pay for, shhhhh. I pay for the Mediacom Intro which is 3Mbps and this is a speed test I just ran.

I pay for 20Mbps (well, my company does) and very rarely get close to that. Usually around half sometimes less.

Mine is supposed to be 8mbps, and i just did a test and it rang up 1.5.

When I made this post earlier today, it was as high as it has been since I tested and it was in the low 5s. Often it is below 1.

I don't have any expectation that Mediacom can fix or resolve this issue.

I had the guy out to look at my phone service and at that time I inquired about the internet. He tested and agreed it was too low, but wanted me to check a few more times to get a feel for what it was - as he switched out my modem. He gave me his card and asked me to call him back, but he has never returned my call or picked up.

I really dislike calling their customer service, but it looks like that is what I'll need to do if I want to have them look, I guess.

I pay for 20 and routinely get nearly 20.

Don't pay TOO much attention to the speedtest websites.

You should be getting ~80% of your connection speed on average, though.

I have Mediacom in Iowa City, and it's terrible. When I was paying for the 10Mbps service, I'd generally get around 2-4Mbps down, and maybe 200kbps up. I called them and changed my plan to the 3Mbps service, and now I still get about 2-3Mbps down, and 200kbps up.

However, I'm planning on switching to Qwest's 12Mbps DSL now that they've finally gotten around to wiring my neighborhood with fiber. I had Qwest at my old house and it was great. I had the 3Mbps service, and reliably got 3-4Mbps. Cable download speeds are too erratic for me. Also, Qwest gives you 1Mbps upload, which is nice if you're uploading lots of pictures or anything like that. I consistently got 1-1.5Mbps upload out of my DSL.

Also, from my personal experience, Qwest's customer service is much better than Mediacom. I'm tired of having to reset my cable modem once a week when my Mediacom VoIP decides to stop working. The "legacy" telecom phone system may be old and out-dated, but the thing just works, as it has for years. Mediacom has a long way to go before they can say they provide a "reliable" phone service.

Mediacom tech just left. He went through all my lines, got rid of all splitters and I still only get around 10Mbsp. He's going to get me a new modem and have some other tech people come out and check the lines outside. Not getting my hopes up though.
