Made Rite Sandwiches

My mom always used them interchangably and whatever she made was ground beef plus mustard, ketchup, brown sugar I think?, and some other crap I don't remember. And it was delicious.

There is a new maid rite in Webster city. It's good but it's expensive. they have a bacon cheese rite that is worth every penny. I could eat one every day until I die.

Sloppy Joes have flavoring.

The only I person I know anymore that likes a true Maid-Rite (ground beef, with a dash of salt) is my 90 year old grandpa. He also doesn't like most people that come around "these parts" and watches Lawrence Welk every night.

In conclusion, I feel like Maid-Rites were popular in the 40s and 50s, when people were singing Jimmy Dorsey and Bing Crosby and spent Friday nights at the local Maid-Rite diner.

Bull ****. Show me one recipe for Maid-Rites that uses only those two ingredients.

Well, I could run up to Taylor's Maid-Rites and take some video of them putting the ground beef into their cooker and cooking it up with nothing else but some salt and then throwing it on a bun.

You are a talking about sloppy joes. Different thing.

Listen here MR! I was in high school with The Mayor. I was a Sr and he was a Sophomore. I played offensive line for Ames High and protected him from Des Moines School Goons! Well, actually I didn't start:smile:

Hmm, I suppose these credentials are acceptable.

Sloppy Joes, or Beef burgers as people called them when I was younger, have a tomato based sauce and are usually delicious.

Maid Rite is a restaurant that serves bland, over priced loose meat sandwiches. I have no idea how that place ever stayed open at one location, let alone became a chain restaurant. All they serve is a small, no flavor, loose hamburger sandwich that costs WAY too much.

This. My mom also made homemade sloppy joes but we called them maid rites at home. I never had an actual Maid-Rite until I was out of the house. I like them both.

Not quite the same as In and Out Burger

Homemade sloppy joes beat Maid Rites hands down. Without ketchup and mustard, Maid Rites taste like cooked ground hamburger.

Maid Rites are pretty damn good. With that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of the chain type Maid Rites go out of business. The 3 that I know of are always empty. Very unscientific but just my observation.

...is the Maid Rite still there in Tama? Used to stop there on the way to Ames during college, and on the way back too.

The food wasn't out of this world, but it always hit the spot.

To this day, even though it's a chain, I still value eating at local places in small communities.

Maid-Rite was founded here in Muscatine. Unfortunately, they closed the original Maid-Rite about 10 years ago. We still have one open here though.

I agree they are good but a bit pricey.

I grew up in Iowa but currently live in Minnesota. My wife who is from here has never heard of Made Rite Sandwhiches. I need someone to dust off my memory banks. In grade/junior high I remember Made Rites being on the menu. Were these a glorified Sloppy Joes, or were they a different sandwhich? My wife is making Sloppy Joe's tonight and I told her you mean Made Rite?

I don't know who better to verify but you guys:spinny:

I know there are official differences, but I've heard tons of different names for loose meat sandwiches (ground beef with our without sauce). Maidrite, Manwhich (name brand), Sloppy Joe, Tavern
