Looking forward to the game

I stopped reading after the part where he said they prefer their message board format to vbulletin. OP clearly cannot be trusted.

Great. Post. This is what I was looking for over here. Screw the people that come back with the farmer shtick. These are normally people who have nothing else to contribute by way of logic. Oh BTW. We have the Hokies to make fun of. We don't need you for that. 

What scares a lot of the UVA fans the most is the unknown. We know what ISU can do and that scares us not knowing that much about your program. I just hope we stay in our game. That's where we have seen the most success.

Thanks for the banter. This game should be a war.
Speaking of the Hokies...................how the heck did your guys lose to them? Is it just one of those rivalries you just throw out the records/rankings, did they improve that much as the season progressed? I ask only because our guys saw them in late November and it wasn't much of a contest.

Tournament performance is not comparable to conference strength. You sure you aren't a big 10/iowa fan?

You can check my post history and track record if you think I'm a fan of Iowa or the Big Ten, which has nothing to do with this argument. Just didn't agree with someone saying that the Big 12 was "by far" the best conference. I know you might not believe this, but people can disagree with you AND still be cyclone fans.

Remember when Virginia Tech went on a 17-0 run in the 2nd half against ISU and that cut their deficit to just under 20 points? It was quite the game... a 99-77 blowout.

I know you aren't an iowa fan! Iowa fans like to use tournament performance as the main measurement of conference strength, that is all I was referring to.

Here's Bill $elf's take:

UVA has had a few strange losses this year. Early loss at George Washington, and losses at Va Tech and Georgia Tech. They have been playing well lately though and it should be a great match up.

FWIW, with the exception of UAB and a few others, most of our defeats in the tournament lately have gone on to win it all. Take it for what you will. :)

Interesting. I'm a reasonable poster. Forgive me for skimming the ISU praise at the end of the post. I'd already checked out by then after reading that:

0. Our AltaVista hosted message board is quite functional.
1. ISU will go up-tempo and get shut down just like everyone else. Teams A, B, C, and D all tried it and what did that get them?
2. Brogdon is God's MVP and his rank is somewhere between that of the Seraphim and the Archangels. Probably somewhere around the Thrones.
3. On the strength of a single weekend, the ACC is the best conference in the country. Disregard the entire season that was just played, it doesn't matter.
4. We're not superior to you. We just have three national championships in the last twelve months.

Re-reading the OP, it's a lot better than the Hawk trolls we get around here. Sorry.
Oh, come on, Klamath. His post can't be any worse than whatever Michigan State fans posted on Middle Tennessee boards. We know how that turned out.

I imagine it's just the ol' rivalry game thing. Unfortunately, we know how that goes with UNI. If VA and Tech played nine more times this year, VA likely wins 8 or 9, but all of them closer than they should be.

Virginia's defense doesn't necessarily scare me. We are really efficient offensively, and I can't remember the last game where that was the main reason we lost. However, VA is physical down low and active on the boards. Niang and Nader need to keep making buckets on the perimeter to help equalize that out.

Plus, I really like the confidence we are playing with lately. There's a swagger that I haven't seen for awhile. This one is gonna be fun.

OK.. I'll play

Did I actually say that you'll get shut down? I stated that it takes teams out of their Rhythm.

My point about teams A,B,C and D was merely a statement that EVERY team says the same thing about our style of play.. Including posters on this boiard..... blah, blah, blah ,blah

2. Brogdon is God's MVP and his rank is somewhere between that of the Seraphim and the Archangels. Probably somewhere around the Thrones.
Yeah.. you're not exaggerating there either.. What do you want me to say.. he sucks? Will it make you feel better about it?

3. On the strength of a single weekend, the ACC is the best conference in the country. Disregard the entire season that was just played, it doesn't matter

No.. on the strength of an entire season...I'll let you do the research on the ACC's body of work all year. You'll doubt me anyway so why bother

4. We're not superior to you. We just have three national championships in the last twelve months.

Something we're proud of.. Did I phrase it in a way that states superiority? I said nothing degrading about ISU... nothing

I came here to talk basketball.. I'll bow out if you can't return the same.. I meant zero disrespect

Yes we have.. GT, FSU, and VT were strange during the beginning if the season. Tony was finding the right mix to start. Took him several games to figure it out. not making excuses.. we got outshot in those games.. We did beat VT by 18 the next time we played them though

No, no, you're cool. Don't go. I'm a very sarcastic person by nature, and that entire post you quoted was heavy with it.

Oh, just a little ribbing from our fans. Don't take it too seriously. I think what Klamath got from your post was probably the same thing I got as well when I first read it. Just a whole lot of confidence and your post makes it sound like VA doesn't have any weaknesses. I'm sure there are some weaknesses to your team, just like we readily admit our team's weaknesses. Otherwise, you would be undefeated.

UVA is not invincible. They have much worse losses than us and took a prayer at the buzzer to beat Wake Forest.

Hey WahooVA - thanks for the intelligent insights. Props to your team for hiring absolutely the right man for the job. (BTW, we feel the same about Steve Prohm.) Appreciate the friendly rivalry, at this point in the season every game is tough. And that's just how it should be.

In reality, playing against WVA was probably a good primer for what we'll get from UVA (without all the fouling, of course). But several things have changed since we played the Huggy Bears.....this group is focused and all in, whereas you probably couldn't have said that earlier. A new coach is always challenged, particularly when he inherits a senior-dominated, experienced bunch. They weren't used to rigorous practices, or having to work HARD on defense. Initially there was some resistance.

But as the season wore on, the players discovered that their coach, along with being a sound X's-and-O's guy, had only their best interests in mind, and wanted nothing more than to make them the best basketball players they could be. We still aren't lights-out on defense, but we are a far cry from the group that ran-and-gunned their way through the Big 12 for the last 3 years.

Make no mistake about it - this team will not fold under pressure. Every single loss they suffered this year was to an NCAA tournament team, and by these margins: 2, 4, 5, 3(OT), 10, 5, 3(OT), 9(OT), 10, 7, 3. Two double digit losses, both on the road. And of course, the Big 12 was the best conference in the land this season by RPI, even though the ACC is having a better showing in the tournament.

I look for this to be a tough, evenly-matched battle between teams that are well-coached and resilient. In the end, I like our chances - a lot - but I'd be glad to hoist a few with you afterward, if such a thing were possible.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck!!!!

I'm not so concerned about styles, etc. I am concerned that they might have better players and coaches. If not, then it should be a fun game.

First.. I come in peace to discuss basketball and all things Virginia (feeding off of your thread) from a UVA perspective. Reading your threads, I have come to some conclusions that are evident in your postings

  • You believe thesabre.com.. our forum was developed by a 3rd grader with Crayons. Quite the opposite. For those of us who have been posting for a long time over there, we prefer that format. Both UVA and Virginia Tech use the same type of forum and have tried the v.bulletin format. We simply prefer the style of our board (not all.. but most). It's very interactive and flows pretty easily.. you can expand or collapse the threads to give it the look you want..

Now for Basketball
  • I've read over and over again about our "slow Style" of play and how that fits right into the mold where you want us.. a few points about that notion
    • That's what everyone thinks. Our packline D is stifling for run-and-gun uptempo offenses. It completely takes you off of your rhythm and makes teams take bad shots or creates turnovers. UNC, Louisville (twice), Miami, Villanova, WVU, Cal, Duke (we won that game.. G Allen.. took about 9 steps), ND, Butler all thought the same.. look where it got them
    • Our OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE efficiency is near the top of the nation. Pretty solid for a "defensive" team
    • Malcolm Brogdon ACC DPOY and OPOY.. 1st time in history. Sure.. put your best on him and if he does happen to struggle... Hall, Perrentes, Tobey, Gill, Shayok, Wilkins, Thompson, Nolte will step up to fill the void. We are extremely deep. That's how we win games
    • The ACC arguably is the best conference in the nation.. 6 in the sweet 16. it's a brutal schedule and we fared pretty darned well. Top to bottom (Minus BC and Wake this year) can compete with any team in the land
    • Coaching.. Tony Bennett is just what the doctor ordered.. He's an unbelievable coach and person. His team buys into his TEAM concept or they usually don't get PT. What Tony has done with this program now, and in the future is remarkable.. Top 10 recruiting class next year speaks volumes. including Mr. Indiana, Kyle Guy
  • Non Basketball
    • I've read here about arrogance and the "better than thou" attitude form our fans.. unfortunately that is what we get from a lot of different fan bases. We're just some humble central Virginia folk
    • If you don't know about our other programs.. 3 national championships last year (Baseball, Soccer, Tennis).. Football sucked.. Now we have Bronco Mendenhall from BYU and hoping to turn things around
  • What we think about ISU..
    • Going to be a tough out. Niang is a beast. going to be tough to try to neutralize him. if we can, we know that you guys have the firepower to get things going.. Morris, Nader..etc
    • We know you're going to try to push the pace.. that's what we're hoping for as that's where our D is at it's best. We also know that you have a great half court game. I've watched a few of your games and am very impressed. I for one, am worried about the match up

This will be a battle of two very good teams with two very good coaches. Sorry this sounded like a UVA resume but just wanted to set a few things straight. All UVA alumni and fans are not dicks... Here's to a injury free, great game...

I think we've both got very, very good teams, and undoubtedly you are going to take some things away from us, and we're going to find ways to overcome some of it. I can really see this game going either way, and think the end result will come down to how we match up in reality on the court, and who is playing the best that day.

haha.. I agree.. i still can't believe that shot went in.. Would have been a terrible loss at the time. Fortunately as a lot of the Hoo faithful think.. including me, that shot may have been the turning point to our season. We were playing like drek, that loss would have been monumental. We went on a tear after that game.

Happened a few years ago as well. We were not playing our best basketball. Tennessee just throttled us by about 30. Tony has a way to turn things around and after that game, we won the ACC reg season and tourney and went to the sweet 16. Then lost to MSU!!! Funny how negatives can turn into positives.

We did have some crappy losses this year though..

Thanks.. i just didn't want to overstep my bounds as a guest. I wouldn't be here if I thought this game was a given. I really came here to see what you guys were saying about your team and try to put it into perspective with UVA.. Not that I can do anything about the outcome..but, I really like to hear opposing fans opinions of their team and ours..

Friday night cant get here quickly enough..
