Looking forward to the game

Yea, I'm also curious about what the fan make-up in Chicago will be. Seems like ISU would be the best represented with MSU out of the picture.

That's a big concern when we were awarded the 1 seed in the Midwest. MSU, Purdue, ISU.. Home games for these teams if we made it that far. We know your proximity to Chicago and that worries us as well. We have a lot of alumni in the midwest and Chicago area and will have a lot of folks travelling up from the south. Unfortunately for UVA though, I doubt if we will match your turnout... We will represent but won't sell out the place

I kid, I kid.

I'm worried about this game as well, but feel like we are playing with house money at this point. Being the underdog and constantly disrespected/picked to lose by the media always helps this team play better. I think all the pressure will be on Virginia's team to win, so hopefully we play loose and your guys are nervous.

I don't think he said anything about his team that we wouldn't say to opposing fans about out own. He even admitted that our players are fantastic and that he's worried about the matchup.

Everyone needs to chill out, do you expect opposing fans don't come to this forum and grovel at the Cyclones feet?

yes...

I honestly think its kind of misleading to think you beat ISU by slowing us down. I get the logic and it makes sense on paper, when you look at who has beat us this year, its teams with depth, who can be really efficient, score (minimum high 70's)) and eventually wear us down.

On the same note, I don't think beating UVA is as simple as speeding up the tempo. IMO the biggest factors for each team are FG% and made 3's for UVA, for ISU its all about assist. If we are moving the ball like the last 2 games, they (and everyone else) can't hang with us. If they force us into quick shots, they will win.

I'm really looking forward to this one, UVA should be better than anyone we've played other than KU. Those are strong words when you look back at this years schedule.

We've done ok for a team Barkley considered a bubble team.

Hoping we can make the UC Hilton East since Bennett reneged on coming to Hilton in his second year at UVA.

I have a full body boner for this game. The anticipation is killing me! Should be a good match up between two really talented teams

Virginia is prob the most patient and efficient team we could face..however there are weak spots..VA isn't an overly big team(which we struggle with). Guards aren't overly quick (which we struggle with). And the way VA plays doesn't allows teams to hang around. Wts...VA is not a team you want to get down to by double digits...at all. Interestingly..a lot of folks think we are this high octane run and gun type team...we aren't. We will def run and can do it as well as anyone..but this team right now has thrived off of half court execution and taking good shots...very similar to VA..

IMO this game will come down to Niang staying out of foul trouble and one of Thomas or Nader being hot from 3. Usually in games like these the stars are on so I'm gonna assume Niang is on. If Niang,Thomas and either Nader/Burton are on forget about it..no team can stop that. Now whether that can continue is another story...hope so.

Some dudes knock on the door and introduce themselves. Some dudes kick the door down, grab a beer out of your fridge, and start flirting with your wife.

Welcome? :jimlad:

Should be an interesting game though. I think it's the extreme at each end.

It'll be a great game. I think if McKay can neutralize and match Gills energy Virginia could be in trouble. Similar high energy players. It'll be interesting to see if Brogdon starts out on Niang or Nader. What're your thoughts UVA fan? Who defends Niang and Nader?

First.. I come in peace to discuss basketball and all things Virginia (feeding off of your thread) from a UVA perspective. Reading your threads, I have come to some conclusions that are evident in your postings

  • You believe thesabre.com.. our forum was developed by a 3rd grader with Crayons. Quite the opposite. For those of us who have been posting for a long time over there, we prefer that format. Both UVA and Virginia Tech use the same type of forum and have tried the v.bulletin format. We simply prefer the style of our board (not all.. but most). It's very interactive and flows pretty easily.. you can expand or collapse the threads to give it the look you want..

Now for Basketball
  • I've read over and over again about our "slow Style" of play and how that fits right into the mold where you want us.. a few points about that notion
    • That's what everyone thinks. Our packline D is stifling for run-and-gun uptempo offenses. It completely takes you off of your rhythm and makes teams take bad shots or creates turnovers. UNC, Louisville (twice), Miami, Villanova, WVU, Cal, Duke (we won that game.. G Allen.. took about 9 steps), ND, Butler all thought the same.. look where it got them
    • Our OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE efficiency is near the top of the nation. Pretty solid for a "defensive" team
    • Malcolm Brogdon ACC DPOY and OPOY.. 1st time in history. Sure.. put your best on him and if he does happen to struggle... Hall, Perrentes, Tobey, Gill, Shayok, Wilkins, Thompson, Nolte will step up to fill the void. We are extremely deep. That's how we win games
    • The ACC arguably is the best conference in the nation.. 6 in the sweet 16. it's a brutal schedule and we fared pretty darned well. Top to bottom (Minus BC and Wake this year) can compete with any team in the land
    • Coaching.. Tony Bennett is just what the doctor ordered.. He's an unbelievable coach and person. His team buys into his TEAM concept or they usually don't get PT. What Tony has done with this program now, and in the future is remarkable.. Top 10 recruiting class next year speaks volumes. including Mr. Indiana, Kyle Guy
  • Non Basketball
    • I've read here about arrogance and the "better than thou" attitude form our fans.. unfortunately that is what we get from a lot of different fan bases. We're just some humble central Virginia folk
    • If you don't know about our other programs.. 3 national championships last year (Baseball, Soccer, Tennis).. Football sucked.. Now we have Bronco Mendenhall from BYU and hoping to turn things around
  • What we think about ISU..
    • Going to be a tough out. Niang is a beast. going to be tough to try to neutralize him. if we can, we know that you guys have the firepower to get things going.. Morris, Nader..etc
    • We know you're going to try to push the pace.. that's what we're hoping for as that's where our D is at it's best. We also know that you have a great half court game. I've watched a few of your games and am very impressed. I for one, am worried about the match up

This will be a battle of two very good teams with two very good coaches. Sorry this sounded like a UVA resume but just wanted to set a few things straight. All UVA alumni and fans are not dicks... Here's to a injury free, great game...

Thanks for the information. I think a couple of things don't get mentioned much about ISU and are huge factors.

ISU has been in pretty much every game they lost and many were lost on last possession. Led at Kansas and OU before a couple of questionable things down the stretch. Beat both at home.

I respect Virginia as a very good team. What worries me is the rebounder inside. Games that ISU truly lost were games where they were out rebounded by a big margin.

Your guard is a stud.

Things that can turn the tide one way.
1. Niang foul trouble
2. Virginia struggling to shoot the outside shot
3. Morris stepping up like he can as a scoring threat.
4. Virginia rebounding much better than isu.

I expect a very good game. ISU won't go away no matter what happens. They score too well for that.

Thanks for the balanced post.

I've read absolutely zero of the dialogue on your boards regarding this game. Just reaction on this board as well as others.

A few thoughts I have:

1) The run and gun thing here is not what it used to be during the pinnacle of Hoiball. Teams have adjusted and we've had to improve half court efficiency. Also with the lack of a backup PG and short front line depth, we've had to slow the game down to keep legs fresh.

2) I know Virginia is a NC caliber team. I know the advanced stats show well for you. I know the ACC is very good and has shown well in tourney. With that said, we played an extremely difficult schedule and the losses we did have were too good competition and the games were close. Take home: We feel very good about our chances against anyone based on those experiences.

3) We've struggled to close out games this year. The 3 or 4 games I watched Virginia play this year displayed they are very good at closing out games. The homer in me says we've hit a new gear the past two games with a healthier Monte and a fresh outlook. The realist in me says this is why we will more likely lose than win.

4) (I know you didn't mention this, but know others have) The hick/farmer smack is such a tired thing anymore. I mean, we live in the day in age where you can learn about anything on youtube, people should know the days of a few pigs and chickens and a 40 acre plot are over. Farming/Ag is a very complex business with gobs and gobs of technical knowledge needed to succeed. All with a huge element of risk. To succeed takes so many skills. It's a poor argument to try and downgrade an institution due to it's connection to Agriculture. I would think students/alumni of a well established academic institution would recognize this.

5) We are by nature humble people. This leads to some people picking up arrogance where their isn't.

6) I recognize your success in other sports. We're pretty proud of what we do given our resources and proximity to densely populated areas. Having two Power 5 schools in a low population state has its challenges.

7) Being in fly over country, I think it might be worth mentioning that we've been playing at a high level for 3 years now. Last 3 tournaments have been two 3 seeds and a 4 seed. Using that measure a top 16 the past 3 years. We expect to be here and this groups goals are much higher than the sweet sixteen. You may know that, but I think it's important to note.

Hope it's fun game. Thanks for posting.

Feels like Friday at lunch time, no idea how I am supposed to focus at work for the next 4 days.

Nice post and welcome.

Should be an excellent game with contrasting styles and really good players. Will be a tough out for both teams, which is the way it is supposed to be in the Sweet 16.

I am nervous about the match-up, but also like our chances. I think getting a suedo-home game will help us out some, and would probably be a little upset about the way this played out if I was the 1 seed in your shoes.

Great. Post. This is what I was looking for over here. Screw the people that come back with the farmer shtick. These are normally people who have nothing else to contribute by way of logic. Oh BTW. We have the Hokies to make fun of. We don't need you for that.

What scares a lot of the UVA fans the most is the unknown. We know what ISU can do and that scares us not knowing that much about your program. I just hope we stay in our game. That's where we have seen the most success.

Thanks for the banter. This game should be a war.

It really ought to be a great game. UNC-Indiana is going to get the media love because of the brands, but I think this might be the stealth best Sweet Sixteen game. Interesting clash of styles and two of the best 3 players left in the tourney? What more could you want?
