The discovery of sauerkraut as a human food stuff must have been made by some very desperate and starving people.

Otherwise who would think to stick some old, fermenting cabbage with a rather strong and putrid smell into one's mouth.

Given this, Palmer's Deli does make a good Reuben.

I guess if you substitute grains for cabbage, the same could be said about the greatest invention of all time... beer.

But consuming beer would have been supported by the influence it had on the drinker.

Positive stuff like finding the courage to kill a saber-tooth tiger. Or thinking you could dance.

I asked this question once, too (who would ever think to let some grains rot in water and then drink the concoction?), and got an interesting answer...

Alcoholic beverages were likely discovered by accident. The first was mead, which is made with honey...bees often build their hives hollowed out dead trees, and when it rains, sometimes the ensuing mixture of water and honey will collect inside the tree. After several months of fermentation, mead is formed. Some hunter-gatherer likely came across one of these hollow tree stumps filled with fluid, decided to quench his thirst, and became the first Barney Gumble.

A couple of different varieties of Reuben sandwiches I have tried.

The Tavern in West Des Moines - Switches the traditional Russian/1000 Island with their house Parmesan Dressing. An interesting take on the sandwich but quite good.

Pizza Pit - They have the Ham Reuben sandwich and although it's not traditional since it comes on Italian Bread with ham, kraut, and mayo, it's a very good sandwich and reminds me of late nights in campus town and eating Pizza Pit to soak up the alcohol in my tummy.

Not to be all deep, but those people were more the norm in human history. We currently are incredibly fortunate in our food security, and the fact that it's so widespread...is thanks universities like ISU (not those with just a sticker on their helmets cranking out lawyers and hippies).

So I'll backtrack on abusing those who don't like kraut...as long as you thank ISU for your freedom to be a picky eater.

Obviously not in Iowa, but Zingerman's in Ann Arbor makes the best reuben in the country. They also charge $15 for them but well worth it.

If you make this comment in Ann Arbor you will spark the great debate of Zingerman's vs. Maize and Blue deli. It's not pretty.

I think I make the best Reuben in Iowa, but I don't want you coming over . . . :jimlad:

Kellers in Downtown DSM makes a good one. We had a Reuben pizza at Chips in Ankeny a few months back and it wasn't too shabby.

Not a Reuben eater myself, but The Belgian Village in Moline, IL is alleged to have the gold standard of Reuben sandwiches in the QC.

Best Reuben I have ever had. One of these times when I visit family in the QC I'm going to have to get a Reuben from there.
