I guess if you substitute grains for cabbage, the same could be said about the greatest invention of all time... beer.The discovery of sauerkraut as a human food stuff must have been made by some very desperate and starving people.
Otherwise who would think to stick some old, fermenting cabbage with a rather strong and putrid smell into one's mouth.
Given this, Palmer's Deli does make a good Reuben.

Obviously not in Iowa, but Zingerman's in Ann Arbor makes the best reuben in the country. They also charge $15 for them but well worth it.
Not a Reuben eater myself, but The Belgian Village in Moline, IL is alleged to have the gold standard of Reuben sandwiches in the QC.
Best Reuben I have ever had. One of these times when I visit family in the QC I'm going to have to get a Reuben from there.
