La Tech transfer Xavian Stapleton has already visited both Alabama and Iowa State, his mother told Also considering Miss. State.

He's on campus now, per a source.
Travis Hines added,
Hoiball @AlexBerngard@TravisHines21 When did Stapleton visit ISU?

Would be a great pickup and help out for '16/'17 and balance out the roster.

Here is his BBall Reference page:

http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/xavian-stapleton-1.html

He got about 15 minutes per game as a freshman, but his per 40 numbers are pretty good (take them with a grain of salt, obviously):

I'm not too impressed with what I've seen just looking at his recruiting rankings, offers, stats at La Tech, etc.

I'm hoping this isn't the kind of recruit Prohm thinks you go after at a Big 12 program like Iowa State. Now, I admit I could be completely wrong on this kid because I don't know the story behind him at all. He just seems like a La Tech level player to me, and not a Big 12 level player, that's all.

Mercy...go take a look at him on youtube. Can't find much other than some hammer dunks but it looks like the kid has some unreal athleticism.

I'm not saying it isn't a guard dominated game. We have a lot more guards and 3 of the 4 seniors leaving are front court players.

I agree with this. It's not as if we won't need any more guards at all, but we can be REALLY selective at what guards we do go after since it's not a top priority need for that class.

I don't know a whole lot about this kid other than the numbers and rankings, etc, so maybe he's a rising star of some kind that I don't know about. I hope so.

If our basketball team starts recruiting the level of players that our football program does, then I will probably expect the same results as our football team. That's all I'm saying.

You probably thought Deandre Kane "just seemed like a Marshall level player" too, didn't you?

Possibly... I can't really remember what I thought about Kane at the time of his recruitment. Although, didn't he put up some gaudy numbers at Marshall?

As I stated, I don't know much about this kid, other than his offers and stats, etc.... so I hope he is some kind of diamond in the rough rising star that I don't know about.

I'm in no way saying he won't be a good get.... he could very well be. I'm just saying that on paper this isn't the level of player we should be recruiting IMO.

15+ pts, 4+ rebs, and 7 assists per game is quite a bit better than 6 pts, 2 rebs, and less than 1 assist per game.

Granted, this kid is was a freshman and only played 15 mins per game while Kane was older and played 37 mins a game, so who knows?

It's a bit worrisome that he only got 15 mins per game at La Tech though IMO. If he was a Big 12 caliber player, he probably should have been starting at a school like La Tech as a freshman and getting a lot more minutes than that.

i think prohm realizes he has two open scholarships now and likely 5 next year. He needs bodies.

Deandre Kane's two years at Marshall (per 36ish minutes):

I'm not saying I think he's the second coming of Deandre Kane, because I don't think that at all, I just don't think you should jump so quick to conclusions just because he went to a non power 5 school. Just look at what Rayvonte Rice did when we went to Illinois.

Kane averaged 15 ppg at Marshall
Rice averaged 16 ppg at Drake
Stapleton averaged 6 ppg at La Tech

If we take him it means they have high hopes for him because we can be selective at that position. I would rather have 2 post players sitting out this season instead of two guards but it just puts more pressure on us to do well in the HS and JUCO ranks for front court players

I will trust Prohm until he proves me wrong. So if he likes him, that's good enough.

It's just that we've been one of the better basketball programs in the entire country the last few years, and this year are a consensus top 10 team going into the year. I'm just hoping to see our recruiting see an uptick along with the success we've had.

It's a bit bothersome with all the success we've had to see us going after guys that weren't recruited heavily at all and couldn't see the court much at La Tech, that's all.

Every year in football we have horrible recruiting classes compared with the rest of the Big 12, and every year we finish at or near the bottom of the Big 12 in football. Recruiting does matter. In fact, it might be the most important thing. I was just hoping at this point we'd be able to do better than taking marginal talent and hoping we can develop them.

This kid might be the next DeAndre Kane.... I hope so. All I can do at this point is trust Prohm. He knows a lot more than I do.

This name sounded familiar. Now I remember why. I saw he was transferring and La Tech restricted where he could go:

"According to the Clarion-Ledger, the school is restricting Stapleton from transferring to more than 50 Division I schools. On that list are other Conference USA schools, schools that are on future non-conference schedules and schools located in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas. Also on the list is Florida, where former Louisiana Tech head coach Michael White is now in charge."
