John Daly is the weekend hacker that hit the big time. I think that's the major appeal. He was something like the 10th alternate for the PGA championship and was notified the day before he could play, drove all night and teed it up and won with a no BS style.
He had the talent talent, it's just he liked to drink, smoke and eat junk food more than practice.

And he really lucked out because his only real talent was driving the ball a mile. He can't putt for squat and never had motivation to work on the rest of his game. If the same situation happened today, he would have missed the cut. People find him in approachable because he acts like the average lazyass who drinks a sixer while watching it on TV.

Daly had really good touch in his day. He wasn't as much of a one trick pony that everyone made him out to be.

Nobody is winning two majors just by driving the ball a mile and not being able to do anything else.

Exactly. His short game was fine when he was disciplined enough to work on it. There’s a reason Tiger once said if he could take something from any other golfer on the Tour, he’d take Daly’s “hands”.

OK, I'm being a little facetious there, obviously he is better than average, but think back to his Major wins. 1991 and 1995. Tiger Woods went pro in 1996 and shortly there after, the golf equipment craze went full stream along with players uping their game to compete with Tiger.

Daly was able to succeed during a relative down time in golf and his driving skills had a lot to do with it. Before him, most players weren't hitting drives of 350+ like he did. That gave him a significant advantage, much like it did Woods, when he started out.

Like a great deal of major winners he putted up a storm when he won them.

Zach Johnson will absolutely 100% be in the HOF. I don't know what you're talking about there.
I sure hope you're right, but I believe the minimum requirements to be inducted are at least 15 professional wins (not just pga) and 2 majors. It would be a shame if he didn't get in but don't believe it's as clear cut as you're implying. I'm a huge Zach fan so certainly hope it happens!

While watching the British Open this weekend, I am still to the day somewhat stunned that Daly won this golf tournament at the old course at St. Andrews. But, in his day, his short game was one of the best. He was definitely more than a 'grip it and rip it guy'. I miss watching him play.

He had a ton of talent, just no self discipline.
