I’m curious, Jay. Who are the five OL who ‘pull well (I think that’s how you phrased it), and who are the starters who don’t?

That was a hypothetical example of how one might use multiple offensive line combinations effectively.

Of the returners, Newell is the best pulling player, the others struggle which is why they did not pull much last year. In 2016 Patrick Scoggins struggled as straight ahead blocker, but was really good at pulling and hitting a target. ISU switched up and had its best run production of the Campbell era in the last four games of that year.

Perhaps, one or two of the contenders brings some skill on certain play call that will bring them in to a game. For instance, Rob Hudson has 20 to 30 pounds on Collin Olson. He may not have the leverage skill, but may be an inside running game replacement at times.

The idea was to give an idea of how 8 for 5 could be utilized to improve overall performance.

Fun read. Understand the attention and described evolution of the O line, but I look forward to seeing Jay's comment on what will happen at WR this year. Who beyond Milton is impressing CMC thus far? How much of a factor can Scates be?

In Jay Jordan's previous piece he ripped on the O-Line and took some negative shots on their talent level. And I took him to task for his lack of understanding of offensive line personnel. Now I must give him credit for a "180" and his recognition that this offensive line actually is pretty good. Which I don't think he realized until CMC stated as such. We will see how much they have improved when they get the Hawkeyes. That will be the early test, if they can push Iowa's D-line around we will know that good things are going to happen.

It will help with a mobile qb against them.

Jay comment in article talking about offensive : "Now, I understand why it has developed in that manner. Campbell is ordered in his approach to say the least. It makes sense to build from the inside out and concentrate focus with raw numbers where the talent balance may favor the opponent." Until the line and TE's could dominate physical play and mentally handle multiple sets/tasks we were destined to see a vanilla offense. Hopefully we will see more two and three TE sets which means the coaches feel we can physically control the line of scrimmage.
