This has been discussed quite a bit already, but the problem that Jacob is going to have is that he's not getting on campus until this summer. That is going to put him behind everyone else and will be a steep learning curve for him to compete for the starting job going in to the first game.

Obviously he has the talent. 4 star QB out of HS who went to Georgia. So he can play. It's just going to be a matter of how fast he can learn the system, get in football shape, etc. And Lanning is just getting better and better everyday right now too as he gets more comfortable being the guy, so it will be tough for anyone to beat him out.

But it will be good for everyone to have some more competition at the position. I don't know if DeLira or Noland will be ready or not, so Park may be depended on to be the back up to Lanning at some point? Also, don't rule out the walk on Kempt either IMO. I think we're sitting pretty good at the QB spot with these 4 guys.

Oh and let me add, I think the ceiling is higher for Park than it is for Lanning. Just a gut feeling mostly. So Lanning is obviously way ahead of Park now, but Park has the potential in him to be better some day if he learns the system, gets in shape, etc. That will all be up to him how badly he wants it. It will be nearly impossible to out work Lanning IMO, but Park might be the more talented QB. Not sure if that makes any sense to anyone?

Staff didn't bring a transfer in to play backup.

We absolutely do need a backup qb. If he is 2nd string that is fine, and with the way Lanning runs he needs to be ready to step in and play if needed.

Way up there
I have seen a lot of talk about Lanning so far, so maybe they did?

You may be right but they could also be talking about Lanning because that's who they are being asked about or because he is actually on campus. I wouldn't expect them to be hyping up a kid who isn't here over a kid who is here.

Not exactly sure.

I meant that you don't recruit a guy to be content with him on the bench. You recruit him thinking he will at least challenge for the spot now or after one year, pending their experience.

A lot of people say qb competitions are a good thing but if there isn't a true favorite we'd be in trouble. Obviously you'd rather have a Boykin than what we had going into last year. I think we have our qb in lanning with someone good enough to in Park to make him get better. If Park wins the starting job I'd be surprised and impressed

I'm sure he'll have every opportunity to compete for the starting job. The staff obviously won't just gift it to Lanning if someone else is outperforming him. However, I think it will be an uphill battle since he won't be here until the summer.

It is definitely a fine line between having an open competition and instilling confidence in Lanning that he is "the guy". Clearly CPR and staff had issues with this concept. Hopefully CMC will be better at handling this type of situation.

Who ever can make the fastest read and deliver the most accurate ball will start. Campbell will mold the offense to whomever wins. I think it will be Joel because he is developing a relationship of trust and leadership with Campbell. HC would be insane to topple that mountain unless Parks is just money from day 1.

Jacob Park was recruited because he has talent. And Jacob Park also fits because he has 3 years to play 3 which means that he is one year behind Lanning and one year ahead of DeLira. And now we can definitely redshirt Zeb Noland.

Lanning is the clear #1. No doubt. At this point the #2 is probably DeLira and then Noland. Jacob Park will have to learn quickly in order to be #2 for fall. Who knows if he can win the #1 job this fall.

With a new staff and new system competition can only make players better. Lanning has a slight advantage by going through spring practice, but as long as Park is here early in the summer for workouts- he has plenty of time to catch up for ISU's first game.

I think this staff will be creative with the offense and the talent he has. Even if Lanning does not start, I would think he has a unique skill set to contribute in a Blake Bell type role. I always thought Stoops did a great job in utilizing Bell in a short yardage power running game.

It should be noted that Jacob Park has not been really playing football for a while. There will definitely be a learning curve and a transition back to the game. But he does have talent as evidenced by his high rating coming out of HS.

Yep and we all know what happened to Boykin. Injuries are part of the game and the sooner Park is ready the better.

I was at practice on Tuesday and Lanning was getting #1 reps with Noland getting a majority of the #2 reps. Starcevich and DeLira split #3 reps. I think you're misgrading DeLira.

I really had no idea on DeLira. I just figured that DeLira would be ahead of Noland based on him being older. Not surprised that Noland would be ahead. Noland is the son of a coach. And Campbell and the staff are very high on Noland.

He's every bit as big as Lanning, which is impressive considering he should technically still be in high school right now. It'd be great if we could redshirt him, but he might end up competing for the backup spot if he gets all the schemes and terminology down quickly.
