as far as i know his agent told him he wasnt ready for the NBA as soon as he signed with him. He stayed overseas i think.
Ivan got some terrible advice when he was told to go to the draft instead of ISU. I think an agent told him he would be a lottery pick then he looked absolutely terrible in draft camps and workouts.
That's why I think kids these days need to be careful what advice they take. Every year several kids come out thinking they'll make the 1st round and wind up a late second round pick or undrafted then wind up having to play overseas. I know they have families to take care of and risk injury but in most cases if they had come back for at least another year they money would probably have been better the next time they tested the draft. These kids get PAID to go to college so their only real expenses are personal and entertainment costs. That's a lot better than the average college student has! I'd love it if the NCAA would be able to but something in their scholarship programs were if you leave college before graduation to go professional that you must repay the university the scholarship. That might make marginal players think twice about leaving because late round draft money or overseas pay is not going to cover that money very well.

Athletes in college don't legally get PAID. Yes they get a scholarship that will pay for their classes, dorm, and food. They have to provide money for their books and any other expenses they possibly have. Such as a cell phone, car, insurance, laundry, and any other expenses. Many students also live in appartments also. So they have that to pay for, along with cable, internet, electricity, with others expenses also. It's tough for a student to go to school during the day, have practice after that and then try and possibly work at a job so you can make some money to pay for bills or just have fun with. They do get it a lot easier than normal students, but it is still not easy on their part because they have much more responsability than a normal student.
Ivan is working as a short order cook at an IHOP in Des Moines. He plays pickup games at the Walnut Creek Y in the evening to improve his basketball skills. He also declared that he will be available for the NBA draft
Fizerfan - it's my understanding that athletes are given living expenses to cover apartment rental, utilities, food, etc... Don't get me wrong, they still have expenses, but it's miniscule compared to those of a non-scholarship college student. What they do is very hard, but there are many non-athletes who do the same thing day in and day out.
