Maybe Varner was just reacting to the Hawks being the good old D-bags they always seem to be. And of course I am talking about the coaches.

The Iowa wrestlers just displayed all their usual class. Meaning none. Same as the announcer Dan Gable.

Aren't there penalties in wrestling for unsportsmanlike behavior (Metcalf, Keddy, Varner, other guys who throw their headsets after the match)? They have gotten so picky on this in football.

Disappointing, we were that close. Also, I made the mistake of reading through some threads over at themat.com after reading the Hawk troll posts on this site. Now, I need to leave the computer for awhile before I break something.

The only real disappointment from this meet was Reader getting beat by Morningstar. That's a matchup we have to have. I had a screaming baby pull my attention away, seemed like he was in control of the match and then he lost. What happened exactly?

At the end of the day, the progress of Long and Ward is great. There's two additional wrestlers that have better than an ice cube's chance in hell of winning a national championship. I hope Gallick can get healthy and back to his best and the other wrestlers continue to progress. If that happens we will be in good shape to fight for the national championship.

It's a guarantee that the Brands brothers and Metcalf will act like immature idiots... they always do. Varner needs to be above that crap. Varner's actions were embarrassing. We don't need to act like the Hawks.

Varner's reaction was classless and unsportsmanlike. I will NOT say it was uncalled for because it was: Iowa's coaches and players showed the worst sportsmanship of any college "team" I have ever seen. If that was a high school team and my son was on it, he would be done wrestling. Period.

That said, I hope Varner has to run some laps or something because I (being a Cyclone) expect better from my teams. Rise above the filth, Varner, just dominate and rise above.

As for wrestling, we looked good overall. We just have the same issues we do with the other Iowa meets: we lose the close ones. Reader's match should've been reader's but he just didn't play smart at the end and let morningstar back into it to win by 1. We lost 2 or 3 other real close matches and could've gone our way. If long pulls his out (like he should've) with Reader, we win, but we just can't seem to do it against the Hawkeyes.

This team is looking A LOT better than last year's that had a shot at the NC on the final day. After this match I think ISU is right in the thick of a NC race.

Odds on a NC:

Iowa 60%
ISU 40%

Yeah, I don't think there is a chance that anyone other than Iowa or ISU wins a NC. These 2 teams just cream everyone else.....

Are there no penalties for this sort of thing in wrestling?

I'm going to give ISU a passing grade today, even though we lost 19-12.

Long wrestled well and has gained on McD all three matches, he knows he can get him and hopefully he'll get his chance at the NCAA's.

Fanny winning was a good sign...hope he is getting back to his comfort level. Wrestled two good matches today.

Really excited about the way Jensen wrestled. LeClere was too much for him but this kid wrestles hard and aggressive. We need Gallick back, but I'm excited about what Jensen can bring next year.

Mueller had another great tournament. He gave himself a shot against Metcalf and that is really all you can ask for. 7-3 loss is a solid performance.

Sorensen had a nice tournament, really thought he could have beaten Jansen from Iowa today which would have been huge for us pulling off the upset, but the more experience he gets the better. He needs to work with Varner because they have similar strengths and body types, he can adopt that style and be successful in my opinion.

Reader was dominant the whole tournament until the final minute of his match with Morningstar. That should have been a win and I think he cashed it in a little early and Morningstar took it away from him. The classic stuff that happens to us vs. Iowa. I trust Reader won't let it happen again because the truth is, he's better than Morningstar and can compete for the title...just can't ease up.

The jury is out on Burk, right now he's more of a warm body than anything else but there is potential there. We really need to find someone to establish our 174 division until he figures out how good he wants to be.

Ward, I think, has begun to develop into the stud he looks like. He was aggressive for most of the tournament and he is powerful. Needs to learn to set up his shots a little more instead of relying on explosivness, but beating Keddy twice and Pucillo earlier today gives him instant credibility and the confidence to make a splash at the NCAA's.

Varner = NCAA Champ. Enough said.

Big Z looked good coming back from an injury. Nice to see him get the takedowns needed to win both matches today. Hope he can get to 100% before the Big 5's.

Disappointing to lose to Iowa again, especially when we legitamately could have blown them out points wise if Long, Sorensen and Reader get their wins, but Jackson has these guys so far ahead of where Cael had them, it really isn't even close. I hate it that we lost, but if you are willing to step back and really compare our team this year to the past three years, we are as aggressive of wrestlers as we were at any point during the Sanderson tenure. We are winning close matches, just not vs. Iowa, and wrestling complete matches which we didn't do under Sanderson and it really got old. Proud to be a Cyclone today, get ready to take the Big 5's and compete for the NCAA title, because I truly believe we have a shot if we can get back to full health. March can't come soon enough!!!

Enter your thoughts on today's loss.

Loss to Iowa. #2 in National Duals and still #2 in NCAA rankings. Also, we beat #2 from last year's NCAA meet.

Until some good team can dethrone these thugs . . the sport will continue to devolve into obscurity. This sport actually had a chance to survice after Gable left . . but you can forget that now . . this sport is on life support. All we need is for Iowa to win everything for the next 10 years and it will be over. Fans and administrators will throw in the towel.

And about Gable . . he needs to stay as far away from this sport as he can.

What exactly did varner do? I had to leave right before his match.

After he won, he walked towards the Iowa side of the mat and was clapping at them. Pretty stupid actually, but much tamer than Iowa's actions today. No excuse for Varner, just saying.

That is why everyone in the wrestling world cant stand Iowa wrestling. Yes, they are very good, but they show absolutely no class while winning. It starts with the coaches, they taunt opposing teams wrestlers...and as someone pointed out after our first meet, imagine a football coach doing that. ESPN would be all over that.

Another example is look at Caldwell from NC State last year vs Metcalf in the championship. EVERYONE that was not a hawk was rooting for Metcalf to lose.

It is too bad that Caldwell did that flip at the end though.

+1 to Cydeout - great recap (didn't quote it to save space)

The only thing that really irritates me is that Iowa fans don't see an issue with the way the hawkeyes "celebrate" or whatever they do. Even last year when Metcalf shoves that dude for pulling the upset (yes, I know he was celebrating, but still, be better than that), they were DEFENDING it.

I think this ISU team is going to get a record 4th straight Big 12 championship and really compete come tourney time.

Man, it would be just glorious if ISU managed to win the big one.
