I'm looking to add a 3 credit US Diversity class to my schedule for next fall that's at least a 200 level. Was wondering if any ISU students out there that had suggestions of a class to take? Looking for something that wouldn't be too much work (trying to add a little fluff to my schedule full of engineering classes) but would still be interesting.

Here's a link below to the list of US Diversity classes, in case people were wondering what classes would qualify. TIA.

I took Soc 235 last semester for my last gen ed. Real easy class, but I ended up dropping it because I missed too many classes and it dropped my grade. If you go to class regularly and don't plan on taking some days off this would be one of these fluff classes you're looking for.

Oh, and I took it with Sapp.

I took that class in the summer one year. Taught by a hot little blonde. She was feisty though. And too "progressive." Wore skirts though.

Just looked it up on AccessPlus, but the only option is reserved for Freshman going through orientation through July 6th. I've been having that problem with some other ones I have looked at as well, but it's still nice to get an idea of my options by the time some of the classes open up.

I should have taken the class with her then. Probably would have given me a reason to go.

Haven't taken it myself, but I've heard that Religion 210 is the easiest US Diversity course. Religion in America... pretty basic stuff.

Intro to Women's Studies (W S 201) may not be a bad idea, either...

And of course, there's HD FS 276

I took AESHM 379 two years ago and thought it was pretty easy. The class is basically critical-thinking skills, which shouldn't be too difficult for an engineering major. The vast majority (80%+) of the class were Elementary Education girls, and I found it rather amusing for them to try and understand the concept of logical reasoning (e.g., red herrings, strawman arguments, etc.). The class had a semester project involved, but it was a joke.

I took womens studies. Easiest class ever. Spent the entire semester arguing with a bunch of whiny stuck up feminists.

I generally like the idea of a broad education. However, is there assessment to determine what someone needs in order to diversify their learning? For instance, can someone from a particular background satisfy this requirement by taking a course associated with their own background? If so, that is not really promoting a diverse education and they should call it "diversity education for traditional Iowans."

We'll have to agree to disagree. Gen eds are a waste of time and money.

Unfortunately, in actuality, these Gen Eds rarely live up to their theoretical educational potential, so I largely agree with you.

I think the best diversity courses are the ones that teach you to think, such as critical thinking or sociology (that starts with universals or common characteristics of human society and considers them in light of various cultures and contexts).

Excellent point. Unfortunately, it seems as if many classes that are listed as "US Diversity/International Perspectives" are not taught well (based on comments I've heard from others regarding these courses). My impression is that these courses simply require students to regurgitate information rather than actually learn about the culture/topic at hand.

I second that class. I took it last semester and it was easily one of my top 5 favorite classes

This reminds me of one of my favorite transfer credit scams. Students who already know languages other than English can take CLEP tests and get college credit for Spanish, French, etc.

I took Phil 235 Ethical Issues in a Diverse Society, and it was the easiest class ever. There were three 1 page assignments (your opinion on some book we read) and if you were a graduating senior you didn't have to do the third assignment. Attendance was important, so if you have trouble actually attending class then it is slightly harder to get an A.

It all depends on your professor. I enrolled in Religion 210 and dropped it after the first day - I found out a large portion of my grade would be based on a group project. Group projects are great theoretically, but someone always ends up doing most of the work and that someone always seems to be me.

Also, I ended up taking W S 201. My professor was a hard-*** about everything (to the point of publicly berating someone if they got up and left lecture early) and it wasn't as easy as it sounds. Plus you have to listen to a lot of "men are the devil" the entire semester. Not fun at all. Plus, what do you know, there was a group project at the end that they didn't say anything about early on, damn it.

Take the sex class, I've heard its interesting.

I took HDFS 276, easy enough. It seems like there are a lot of easy classes that fall into a diversity class. It seems like they will give you a good grade just because you signed up to learn about a topic they are passionate about.
