Who pays for these rankings and determines the criteria that is used?

Doesn't seem like this can't be gamed.

Can’t seem to post the link but the Wall Street journal has rankings this year. ISU is ranked around there but they have us as the highest ranked school in Iowa by a decent margin. This one goes off of salary, experience, value, social mobility. Seemed like a good list

The us news rankings are trash. Its the AP poll of college rankings.

They aren't great, but it's not like there is some other metric where all the state university and general education indicators haven't been dropping for two decades now.

There is absolutely a consideration process for the rankings that includes Iowa State paying out some money to the ranking organization.

The rankings are massively flawed and have done enormous damage to higher education.

That said, I'm laughing at the idea that ISU just isn't playing the game - or sending the check - any longer. Because there's never anyone who talks like that when their ranking is good or rising.

Someone should tell CF sponsor the Ivy College of Business that these rankings are meaningless, since theirs went up significantly and they're touting it accordingly. I guess their memo from Beardshear didn't arrive before they cut their check.

Flawed definitely.
You can get a shot in the arm because during the period you have a new building, have a lot of professors research papers being published, etc. Or you can get "penalized" because the new building is not complete yet or there are unpublished papers waiting to be published.

I read print edition US News and World Report for the bikini centerfold, not the articles.

Yeah it is flawed but prospective students absolutely look at this stuff and it unfortunately is really important to attracting top talent

Nearly every ranking/awards organization is just a way to make money. No different than every newspaper's "2024 Best of _____ County" polls or the awards handed out at the US Beer Open. It's all a sham and the participants are paying for something they can advertise.

That may be, but seems to me, the people who actually research if these rankings are flawed or BS are the ones who fall in the rankings. They may be flawed and they may be BS, I really don't know because I've never looked at the criteria for the rankings, but they are out there and I guarantee you people out there see them when making decisions about schools. We live in a headline based society now. The news that ISU dropped is out there, no matter how flawed.
