Is this team tired? Does TJ need to ease up the rest of the way?

TJ's teams won the Big XII tournament last year and made it to the second weekend in the NCAA 2 times in 3 years, and yet everyone is convinced his teams are burned out at the end of the season. Good teams take bad losses all the time in basketball. It happens.
As though those things are mutually exclusive

How often have we played to seed after winning the Big 12 tournament?

Right, ISU lost to Illinois by 3 because ISU won the Big XII tournament. Never mind the fact they had played 2 games in 12 days leading up to Illinois. I could argue rust had as much to do with poor play as fatigue.

I think I heard we flew back and then had to be right back on a plane to get to Stillwater. It would make me tired without even playing.
Yeah, I dont understand this. I have zero knowledge on how basketball budgets work, but they could have gotten to Stillwater Sunday and just rested for 2 days. All that air travel will have an effect on the human body.

I never understand the "we are tired/beat up" nonsense. Every team is this way, especially as we roll into March.

Iowa State is deep enough to have a solid 8-9 rotation and most teams don't have that, so that shouldn't be an excuse.

It boils down to the following: minimize TO's, execute on the offensive side and out rebounding the other team. ISU has been a rollercoaster on those three items.

I kind of feel like that is why Keshon is sitting right now. He is banged up but I think he is exausted also. Be good for Keshon to get some rest. This team needs everyone to play well. It's built so that what Keshon does helps Heise and Milan. What Jones and Milan do helps Keshon. It's kind of unusual that one player can make a difference but this team really needs all of the stars to play to be effective.

I do recall analysts "marveling" about Fred's teams being fresh because he ran the season like a hybrid of a college/NBA team during the week. He would have film sessions and shoot-arounds/walk-thrus without going hard on the court in practice. Wasn't there so I can't say if it was true...but that was discussed by analysts often. TJ would have been there to see it...maybe TJ's philosophy is just different and doesn't see that as beneficial. OR...maybe TJ does this? I don't know...we do know the players go balls to the wall prepping for the season.

This always comes up after losing and always will at the end of the season. Its an easy excuse. Only interesting this excuse, that it is never mentioned when the team wins. I get its a long season November - February, we are almost 30 games in. 120 days with maybe 15 meaningful games with several breaks in there with November, December and holiday breaks. Kids play aau tournaments several games weekend after weekend. Being tired after the 5th game in two days makes sense. I think its more of a mental check out drain thing then anything. When you step on that court be mentally ready to go to battle to get that win. Mentally something has to switch when its game time and come out to dominate night in and night out. This late in the season, that game last night was concerning. I still believe in this team but not with that mentality last night.
For as good as this team was the first 1 1/2 months of the season, the last month and a half has been very mediocre and produced a 6-6 record. If they keep playing like this it will be an early exit from both the conference and national tournament.

Looking back on the 8 min TJ press conference about how thankful he is and naming each player and the fans, I am starting to wonder if this team has a fragile ego.

Many won’t like that statement but that is our reality at this time given the last 12 games.

Hold the 3 seed line. That is all that matters at this point. You do not want to fall to that 4 seed line. The conference title race is done. All that matters at this point is to be prepared, healthy and rested for the NCAA tournament.

I have never been a fan of the "they are too tired" conversation. These are 18–23-year-olds who are in some of the best nutrition and weight programs in the country. They have plenty of time unlike people who are in their late 30s to get healthy. Takes about a 2-day recovery at the absolute max for kids this age and younger. Their bodies can take this wear and tear, so I have always hated this excuse, the issue with this team is the turnovers, it has where a lot of the issues have been all season the winning has just covered some of those issues earlier in the season. The turnover rate isn't the highest, so it is fixable. Go back and look at the Iowa, Auburn, Dayton, Marquette games. They were good turnover wise; it's from the Arizona game on where the issues seem to have started with turning it over a lot, but it is just the dumb unforced turnovers that have been so mind boggling.

The entire Big 12 is playing terrible right now except Houston and BYU. I really think a part of it is this ridiculous schedule. Hopefully they go back to 18 and have a bye week somewhere.

I’m not sure the typical human minds can value seeing an extra 1-2 wins on a record in the same light as an extra 1-2 losses.

It’s not unlike when we got 7/10 teams in the ncaa and some other conference would get 7/14 or 7/15 and the reporting was that this means totally equal conference strength.

We’re 17 games into the Big 12 season. We’ve played 18 game schedules since 2011-12.

On a big stage when you have the better part of 18,000 people behind and the other team has nothing, it is easier to ride on adrenaline to carry you through. Regular season, going through the grind, going on the road to an empty gym, there is none of that. It is harder to overcome tired legs.

One thing I think is lacking is we only have one true point guard on the team, and that is Tamin, who is not at 100%. We compensate some with Gilbert taking over the load but now he is injured so here we are. Ideally you want/need two point guards. We were almost better off last year with Jackson Pav able to play some minutes as a ball handling guard. We do not have that 4rth guys this year. Heise is not a guard who is a ball handler. So we are minus one from last year.

100% this. I’m not sure why people want to try and justify why we are 6-6 with tiredness (all teams are tired and play the same # of games), injuries (we lost our 5th best player for a month and people have been using that as a reason why we went 3-4), etc.

We aren’t going to win the conference, we can still get a decent seed, and we’ll now put all of our eggs into March. We can still have a super successful season. So I don’t know why it’s so taboo to talk about this team’s struggles or why TJ’a teams are very mediocre in February.

Again, they were 6-2 last year in February after having two limited rosters the first two TJ years that leveled off, and they haven't had the injury or sickness bug until this year.

It's not taboo; it just lacks context and, pertaining to last season, isn't even true.

So 1 of his 4 years was good, and 3 of 4 weren’t. Maybe I’m tired of people justifying losses by saying we are tired and haven’t been fully healthy - ok, but NO ONE is fully healthy and not tired.

Great teams overcome injuries and fatigue. I’ve come to the conclusion that this isn’t a great team. It’s a very good team that could do something special in March. But it’s okay to acknowledge this team has greatly underperformed over the last 1.5 months and didn’t capitalize on an opportunity to challenge for a conference title and #1/#2 seed.

How can the three guards even practice? Not sure how you can do anything but rest them. CuJo sick, Gilbert isn't playing, and Tamin taking has a broken thumb. I hope Tamin isn't out there doing charging drills with his injury.
