I'm trying picture an alien race coming all the way here, looking at this burning dumpster fire of a mess, and thinking, hey, we should help these guys out. It's not working lol
Haha, yep. I subscribe to the view that most species who have mastered interstellar space travel to send missions all the way to another solar system are advanced enough that they would come here to observe and/or help, rather than dominate or destroy. I also believe there will be a limited amount of advanced species who progress on the same timeline to interact, so any species like us who is capable of space travel could be of interest and worthy of their efforts.

I think it's ignorant to assume we're the only intelligent life that has been or even will be. But on the grand scale of the timeline of the universe, assuming that our timeline halfway lines up with someone else's is very unlikely.
That’s the hard part isn’t it? Earth has been here for 4.5 billion years…. And hell we’ve only had airplanes for a little over a hundred. And we’re nowhere near capable of interstellar travel. And objectively, we are probably more likely to blow ourselves up and end up back in the Stone Age than we are to achieve it.

I've got an aerospace degree from our favorite academic institution so I think I may have a little bit of familiarity with the subject matter.

Yet you are on an ISU message board. I'm guessing you are not one of the top physicists out there toying with the latest technology.

The Great Filter is talked about in the Fermi Paradox article I linked about which addresses this. Only a very select few get through that filter and we have no idea where we are on the filter timeline...

Very interesting stuff.

Awesome. I’m going to read it all later after I smoke a bowl or pour a drink

I question if there is intelligent life on earth, let alone on other planets in other galaxies. I believe it when they say the IQ of people on earth has fallen.

I hear ya. Have you ever seen a pan-handling dolphin or a drug-addicted whale or an eagle with a hoarding problem? Maybe they know more than we think.

Maybe their planet is even more of a burning dumpster fire of a mess. In that case, they are probably like the Independence Day aliens and we'll just have to hope that the guy that slapped that other guy on stage at the Oscars and the scientist that saved us from both the aliens and the dinosaurs can save the day.

A dead skunk, several rotting fish and the eaglets feathers aren't even combed. Maybe not quite hoarding but definitely quite messy.

I believe there is one God. And if He created us and that's all He wanted to create from an intelligent life standpoint...then who am I to tell him differently?

So your god put 250 Billion stars in our Galaxy and billions of other galaxies in the Universe but just put life on one? Your god must be a bumbling, wasteful fool.

You’ve got this all ass backwards. Any religious person with half a brain who believes God created life on Earth would think that God created all these other worlds to put life on them as well. If you believe in Creationism then the Universe should be flush with life. It’s scientific minded people who should be skeptical.
