Next year we'll have the same post after 3 or 4 games at least and people will again be saying "well outside of the games the offense underperforms, they perform pretty well! So you're all dumb for saying let Manning go!" IMO he's going to need to change or at least alter a large part of his philosophy if the Cyclones will hit their ceiling as a program. Not saying he can't or won't, but that he needs to if Iowa State wants to keep building upon the success they've had.

its just so stupid to me how stubborn he is. Everyone and their dog knew we weren’t going to be able to run the ball with our line and Clemson’s talent. Yet, here we are with the slow developing runs out of the shotgun

I wish I could say I couldn't believe he brought almost the same gameplan tonight without Breece against CLEMSON as he did against like Kansas with Breece. ISU was only ever going to win with Purdy's arm and while Purdy wasn't perfect today, he yet again was put behind the eight ball by a vanilla gameplan that never adjusts for opponents until the second half, if not the fourth quarter.

We lost to Iowa due to turnovers and poor special teams
We lost to Baylor due to absolutely atrocious special teams
Defense did not play well vs Tech or WVU
Offense did not play well tonight (with one hand tied behind their back)

Im not calling for manning to be coach of the year, but those saying fire him are being ridiculous
Turnovers against Iowa were from the offense. (Manning)
ISU will NEVER compete in September with TM as OC.
Spring/summer camp reps. Playcalling. QB development. Timeclock management. Pregame scouting. OL performance. All on Manning.
Mac and Chiz both used a buddy system for their coordinators and they both had problems. Look at the offensive talent that was under utilized this year- 2020 all big12 talent at almost every position.

2018 Iowa State was 83/130 in points per game in FBS. Averaged 26.8 points

In 2017 56th. Avg 29.2

In 2019 39th. Avg 32.2

In 2018 Iowa State's "buy game" which usually pads the stats was taken away from us with a weather cancelation. Anyone, with any hint of football knowledge, that sat through every single game could see that Campbell let Brock be Brock in 2018. A 6 foot, dual threat quarterback being contained within the pocket, like he has since Manning came back, is truly asinine and so god damn counterproductive

It is time for to have some self-evaluations.

They need to stop scoreboard watching. Zero urgency or intentional play calling unless we have to score.

Iowa State rescheduled and still played Drake, there was still a buy game, grasp more.

In December, with the field torn to shreds in an utterly miserable environment. I suggest you grasp more, because you don't seem to grasp the bigger picture
Speaking of buy games and Manning, another aspect of our offense that is infuriating is the scoreboard watching. All we need to know about Manning/CMC's offense is that it can look the same whether it be Clemson's defense or UNI's defense There is little doubt imo that we lose 17-21 to WVU or TT if that is all the defense gives up.

We can score. We have talent. certainly enough to pad stats against weak teams. We just confuse being easy to defend with ball control. Which is causes a lot of close losses given how bad we are at the details and winning the margins. Upperclassman Purdy in particular rarely made those winning plays.

There's been a game or two each season where the offense has come out firing. But the problem is people are going to take that as a positive and not an indictment of Manning like they should.

Everything you said is right. People can go back and watch if they want, but the offense is stuck in the mud until the end of the second quarter and they have to go hurry-up unless Breece breaks a big one. That or it's stuck until they're down multiple scores in the fourth and ISU either overcomes it because of talent or falls short.

It's like pulling teeth watching a team with all-conference players at every skill position on offense play like they're hoping to grind out wins and just barely squeak by. In no world is struggling to get past UNI acceptable, they're not an FCS power anymore, or at least not recently. Even if they are, it doesn't matter.

Typical Manning Called Game....Tom thinks he has to establish the "running game 1st"...NOT AGAINST THAT CLEMSON DEFENSE....HellsBells it was time to just let Brock Purdy be his usual Scrambling Self and take our chances.

Tom Manning has to be THE WORST OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR IN THE BIG TWELEVE CONFERENCE!

I would think Manning would give Purdy the reins for this game to prove he's the best and most experienced ISU QB ever. Add some misdirection to the run/pass game. Throw to Kolar 15 times, maybe a screen or two to Brock or Silas. I think Campbell has to take the OC duties from Manning and find someone a little more creative. He got rid of the S/C coach (a huge role in CFB) so maybe he'll get rid of Manning.

I get it, but this feels like one of those "lies, damned lies, and statistics" kind of statistics. Did anyone trust this offense, at any point, to grind out a TD drive when we really need one? Did anyone trust this offense to grind out three yards on an important third down? Did anyone believe for one second we were going to drive 95 yards and score on Clemson to tie the game?

I'm tired of the offense being AWOL for half or 3/4 of every other game.
And do you think it was fair to expect us to go 95 yards in the final 2 minutes (with 1 timeout) against the best defense in the nation when we're playing with no Hall, a one handed Hutchinson, and a makeshift Oline?

We didn't lose this game because of Manning and we didn't have a disappointing season because of Manning. I think it has more to do with the Online. Doesn't matter how good (or bad) the offensive coordinator if the Oline can't run block or protect consistently.

They are not the best defense in the nation when everyone is playing, let alone with people hurt/sitting out.

I think they were at least top five statistically for most of the season. Georgia was likely the best but they were not far behind. They were playing really well the last few games.

Hopefully getting some sleep helped better think better. Firing the offensive coordinator of the second best offense in the big 12 is not what's needed. We would laugh at any school that did that. Obviously every play call isn't going to be perfect. But there was a chance to win every game, and it usually came down to a stupid turnover or penalty, which the OC can't control.

IMO we needed to play to our strengths, we have a really talented TE and WR group. play the 5-10 yard outs and play like Kingsbury did at Texas Tech. the height advantage of Kolar and Allen and the speed advantage of Hutchinson and Noel would have had that young LB group on their heels. This would have opened up the run game to the outside for Purdy and Brock.

Having the 2nd best offense and also being held back considerably by coaching are not mutually exclusive.
