Is Fan Engagement a Problem?

I wasn't at the game last night so maybe the in person atmosphere was fine and I'm just complaining for no reason. But I can't help but notice when the camera pans and the entire lower bowl is sitting there dead silent during a 2 point lead with under 4 minutes to play in a redemption game. This feels like the time in the game to me where a loud rowdy crowd could really help to sway the game, but instead it seems like everyone in the camera shot just apathetically watched the team coast to another loss.

I get not standing and cheering the entire game, especially when games are lasting over 2.5 hours, but those last crucial minutes with a close lead don't make sense to me. We pride ourselves on the great gameday atmospheres we create but it seems that atmosphere only comes in spurts, and dies the second something goes wrong. I don't quite get why it is. Maybe it just takes so long to get the priority points to get those lower bowl seats that by the time you get there you're too old to want to stand and cheer, maybe the flow of events in the stadium (timeouts, fouls, timing/song selection of the band and speakers) brings down the energy, or maybe everyone's is just tired at the end of a long season. Whatever the reason is, it's disappointing to see on TV when other fanbases would be seen going rabid in that same scenario.

I've been to 7 games this year and i could set my watch to whatever song they played being at a specific minute mark of the game.

But i have to remember this is same ath dept that plays 1995 Jock jams and attempts stripe outs without providing shirts to fans so they're pretty out of touch.

I feel like lateish weekday games against a non marquee team is always a little bit hit or miss crowd wise.

Sounded great on TV until that weird flagrant and technical foul situation just deflated the atmosphere and the team didn't really give them much to cheer about after that. That 3 that the random guy threw up and swished after their tech FTs really sucked

I do think we need to be on the officials more than what we do as we have a coach who doesn't generally complain that often, but you see what happens when the officials let themselves be intimidated by Huggins. The crowd in Hilton should be in that role.

Sounds good on tv. The Hilton music/other things done at timeouts has gotten very stale. They could definitely do way more to fix that.

It was actually a pretty rowdy crowd in person especially when there was just some offense to go with the defense.

Also was that crowd shot during one of the endless prolonged reviews? Holy cow those are crowd killers.
No the crowd shot I specifically remember being striking to me was when we were up two and WVU scored to either tie or go up by 1 (don't remember exactly) and it seemed like the whole crowd went "welp that's the game". But yeah those long reviews are definitely kills for sure. They seem even longer when you're at the game too.

The crowd at that game had some of the highest fan engagement of all season.
That's good and It was definitely noticeable at times, just couldn't really get that feel at the end of the game when it was close. Obviously hard to tell over TV though.

I think it's a combination of getting stuck with the 8 pm game on a Monday night and having a team that isn't highly skilled on offense. Fans get excited by big shots and scoring runs. I watched on TV and thought that when the Clones energy went up in the 2nd half and we caught up and took a lead that it sounded loud. But then it just seemed to deflate when we couldn't score. The flagrant followed by the T incident took alot out as it took a long time to sort out and everyone just had to sit there. Just my opinion but I thought it was BS to call a T on Grill. I get that he shoved the guy but he was standing over top of Kunc. How many times have you seen pushing and shoving and they just separate them? I thought the ref's messed that one up and you could argue that lost the game for us. We lost momentum and they gained a lot by rallying around their guy.

It sure doesn't help. There were a lot of dejected people walking out of Hilton last night. The crowd really wanted the W for the team last night.
which fans were more dejected?
  • the fans that actually stayed in their seats the entire game
  • the fans that watched the last 4 minutes from the concourse(this needs to be addressed)
  • the fans that completely left the arena before the game ended
