Ipod touch

Does anyone have an Ipod touch on here? I was just with a buddy who has one, and it looks just like an Iphone minus the phone part. what is nice is that it has internet capabilities and everything built into it which would be very nice around campus. It also has a very nice picture for videos you upload into it. I'm thinking about getting one very soon off of ebay.

Should I get a 16gb, or 8gb. Does anyone have any preference over the other?

I got a 16gb when it came out, and I LOVE it. Really, the size depends on several things:

• How much music do you have?
• Are you going to load up many videos/shows? If so, how many?
• Do you weed out music/shows and replace them?

I have a ton of music and several TV shows, so I got the bigger one. Video files obviously take up a great deal more space, so it's all kind of relative to what you're watching on it.

I use it a lot when I'm at the airport (I travel a lot for work). It's really easy to navigate - my eyes are kind of bad, so I have to squint a little more than I'd like, but I can see CF on it quite nicely. :yes:

I have the 16 gig as well and LOVE it. Like Angie I have a lot of TV shows (Family Guy, Seinfeld) as well as all my music, which admittedly isn't very much, and still have a little room to spare. I can now rip stuff off DVDs instead of having to buy them off of iTunes.

I don't know what the battery life is like on the Touch, but watching video on my iPhone drains the battery like none other. Seems like the same goes for web surfing.

Like Angie said, when it comes to music and videos, it just depends on what you have more of. If you're not going to be using it for watching videos, get the smaller Touch. If you have a lot of music you simply can't part with, or you're going to watch a lot of videos on it, get the larger version. I had to laugh at the smaller storage space for the iPhone, but when it came down to it, I actually had trouble filling those 8 gigs up with my favorite albums.

The only bad part about the internet is you have to be by an open wireless internet hotspot, its not like the iPhone where its broadband accessible anywhere. It's still definitely worth it though.

Yeah, that's why I'm jealous of AirWalke - I would love to be able to pull up Mapquest or something on it while driving. I keep hoping they'll add that capability.

So, when does one feel the need to watch a movie or tv show on a 3" screen (or whatever it is)? Even if you travel a lot ,don't you have a laptop that you can watch them on? I guess I just don't get it.

So you have to be around a wifi hotspot correct? So the campus of Iowa State doesn't have Wifi just wireless capabilities? let me know

I am personally totally OCD about my laptop - I hate using the battery if I don't have to, because then I have to wait for the power to all drain before I charge it back up. Plus, you have to plane-side check it on a lot of smaller planes.

Plus the iPhone/Touch screen is a lot easier to look at in sunlight compared to a laptop.

Scottie33, ISU has a lot of wireless hotspots around campus, especially in classrooms, but I don't know how the reception will be, say, out in the middle of central campus.

Well i was just confused between wi-fi and wireless internet, i know ISU has wireless all over the campus, but i didn't know this would calssify as wi-fi...thanks for the info

It shouldn't be a problem on any commercial flight. Jets should be fine with consumer electronics, regardless of size. It's been 10 years since I've flown on a turboprop, so I suppose you might not be able to use things on that, but odds are you won't be on one of those anytime soon. As for the battery, you only have to fully drain modern LiIons or NiCads the first time; after that you can do as much partial use and partial charging as you like- it makes no difference. If a battery will last through 10 thousand full charges, then it will last through 20 thousand half-charges or 40 thousand quarter-charges.

All of central campus and the West Lawn are wireless. I actually do homework out near the flagpole on central campus during the summer.

There's no difference. "WiFi" is a kind of tech term to refer to wireless internet, which is what you find all over campus. What they were talking about was how the iPhone uses its cellular towers to connect to the internet from anywhere that it gets a phone signal, as opposed to the iPod touch, which has to be in range of an open wireless network (such as 'iastate'). Someone with an iPhone can connect to the internet while travelling 70mph down the interstate; someone with an iPod cannot. They would have to stop somewhere like a rest stop or hotel with free WiFi.

Sadly, many of the short legs out of Des Moines and to some of the legs to the smaller regional airports from the main hubs are tiny little Canadairs and puddle-jumpers without much more storage room than for a purse or manbag. They will let you take your laptop out of the case and carry it (while the bag is checked planeside), since there's only a very small amt of storage, and only on the starboard side of the plane. Since my laptop is 17", I almost always have to check it on those... :sad:
