Just ate at Battle's in Campus Town once again and the sauce was great but overall the experience was wanting; there is a place in Council Bluffs that gets my Four Stars called the Hog Stop BBQ at 53A Exit off I-29 in Bluffs: Hog Stop BBQ - Council Bluffs Casino District - Council Bluffs | Urbanspoon

H.S. BBQ's meat and sauces are great. But there is much more than cures for caveman cravings for flesh over flame dripping spicy sauces. What really makes me lay awake at night salivating are the sides to the meat treats. Hog Stop's Corn Bread is lights out! Coleslaw? The best I've eaten at any BBQ Shack. Even the lowly baked beans were sumptuous. I've got to believe all this stuff is made on-site from improved recipes of BBQ from all over especially Kansas City.

And if you stay at the motel next door open your window and swoon. Wafting on the breeze seeming day and night is the luscious essence coming from Hog Stop's smoky temptations.

Stop in Council Bluff for Hog Stop's BBQ and if nothing else (casinos included), the trip will be well worth it!

Not in Iowa, but Baldy's BBQ in Lakeville MN is amazing. They have a gold BBQ sauce that is freakin awesome, and their spicy sauce is actually spicy, unlike that weak wimpy stuff you find at most other places.

I love Battle's sauce.

Jethro's has to be in the running. The only individual item there that is better than anywhere else is the wings. I suppose their sides are better than anyone else's too. However, there is nothing substandard at Jethro's IMHO.

Uncle Wendell's has my favorite pulled pork.

Woody's has great brisket.

Still need to try Smokey D's and Cactus Bob's.

Golden BBQ Sauce!? I make that! and it's a mustard/molasses/honey/spice mix. Good stuff if you like a kind of tangy sweet honey-mustard. Is Baldy's like that?

Jimmy's in Boone is the best I have had. He does it the way George used to do it at Battle's. Battle's has really gone down hill since he died

Yeah, that sounds like it! I've tried to make it once, didn't turn out so good. Don't think the recipe I used had molasses though, I think it was just brown sugar, so might make a difference?

You guys are gonna hate me. But The Pit in Iowa City is the best barbeque I've ever had in the state.

I didn't want to say bad things about what is an ISU/Ames institution, Battle's. But they have no CORNBREAD! I had ice tea and it was watery and I'm being generous. My wife's BBQ beef sandwich was nothing special... I liked my 1/4 chicken though! Worst was that the sides added nothing to the experience.

Yeah yeah I had relatives pushing to the The Pit. I have that on my list but I hate to give any business to I.C. Will hit it soon though.

After living in the Cedar Rapids area, the idea of eating at anywhere called "woodys" has a certain grossness to it.

I've driven by there a lot. A buddy of mine used to live kitty corner from there and mentioned that it was good.

Something about it just never drew me in.
