Iowa State's bowl game endzone designs (2000 to present)

I saw someone on the bird app make something like this for West Virginia bowl games, so, here is every Iowa State endzone as seen in bowl games from 2000 to present.

Note: I am working on a graphic to incorporate the bowls from the 1970s, I have the '72 Liberty and '78 Hall of Fame Bowls done, but am looking for footage of the '71 Sun and '77 Peach to finish this project.

That's something I battled with internally. I could've gone J2021 and D2021 but ultimately settled on going with the season associated with the bowl.

I had forgotten that before 2017 it had been 5 years since a bowl and that it was repeat Liberty Bowls.

And Boise State not even changing the TDs for their bowl is all you need to know for the 2nd half of that season.

How about including the 2020 Big 12 Championship Game? It is arguably the most important post-season game we ever played. Plus, it was just so fun to watch the Texas HS championship games scoring TD's into an endzone that said "IOWA STATE."

You're welcome! I took pictures at the 1977 Peach Bowl also but none of them have the ISU end zone in them. Surely someone on here has some pictures of it!

Just a little side story, the guy with the back of his head in the lower center of this photo is Keith Krepfle's Dad. The guy to his right and looking at him is Keith's brother.

Majors loved to run the run-pass option from QB Carlson to TE Krepfle and did so in this game. Keith caught the pass from Carlson right on the "U" in the LSU logo in the end zone in this picture. Keith's Dad had tears of joy after that touchdown.

1971 was my first year of truly following CFB as a kid. I have a few splashed memories from 1970 including watching the Bear Bryant Show on Sunday after the Alabama @ Houston Game in the Astrodome and listening to the 1970 Alabama-Auburn game on the radio at my Grandparents house while the adults and older children were at the game.

So, fast forward to 1971, I listened to the Alabama @ Southern California game on the radio with my mom to open the season, I went to my first CFB game the following week to see Southern Miss (with Ray Guy) @ Alabama in Denny Stadium when it was still a 59,000 lower bowled stadium and went to my second game later in the year to see Undefeated Auburn (9-0) with Heisman Winner Pat Sullivan vs. Undefeated Alabama (10-0) with Heisman Finalist Johnny Musso. Both Sullivan and Musso were Birmingham kids!

That brings me to the Bowl Games. The only three Bowl Games I remember that year are the Sugar, Rose and Orange on NYD which we watched together as a family of mixed Alabama and Auburn fans. I enjoyed watching Oklahoma whip Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, we ALL enjoyed watching Stanford Upset Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and I was deeply saddened by Nebraska crushing Alabama in the Orange Bowl.

That being said, I always love seeing pics and articles about the 1971 Sun Bowl, because I know how important it was for Iowa State. Plus, I was a Bert Jones fans as a kid when he was with the Colts, and I have always been a Johnny Majors fan with my first Iowa State memory being the 1972 Liberty Bowl Game, and he was respected by Alabama fans even though he coached at rival Tennessee. I also love the Sun Bowl and was fortunate to go the 1996 game when Stanford (w / Ty Willingham) whipped Michigan State (w / some whipper snapper of a coach named Nick Saban)!

FWIW, I became an Iowa State fan in 1978 when the Cyclones came to Birmingham to play in the Hall of Fame Classic @ Legion Field. I went with my brother (Auburn fan) and my brother-in-law (Auburn grad) who were both pulling for A&M. Meanwhile, I was a loud and proud Cyclone for the first but not the last time in my life! Unfortunately, no pics of the end-zone from that night though.

Merry Christmas! Just my wife and I today, but it is nice to remember the Holiday Season with my family from when I was a kid.

I got to thinking that was something that was done back then and wasn't changed because Boise State was in the game too, but watched highlights of this year's potato bowl and to this day it still has Boise State and Broncos in the endzones. Is it that expensive to change for 1 game?

It'd be impossible (and/or financially irresponsible for these smaller host schools) to replace the end zone turf for one game, and impractical to try to paint over a sewn-in design.

South Alabama's field still said "South Alabama" for that bowl game. Same for New Mexico.
