Iowa State University Cyclone Varsity Marching Band played the theme song to "Coach"

Fun fact that I just learned today: our marching band recorded the theme song to the 1990's TV series "Coach". Please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't know this until now...

EDIT: please see loki8838's post for the full story on this (#13 in this thread)...apparently Wikipedia isn't 100% accurate (imagine that).

Mind blown

The Coach opening theme by John Morris, which also served as the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles school song, bears more than a passing resemblance to the Minnesota March authored by John Phillip Sousa. The theme song was recorded by the Iowa State University Marching Band, and the band was also shown in the opening sequence of the show.

You know why that show lasted so long? Because people never got bored after the theme song.

You know why people never got bored after the theme song? It wasn't followed by Bells of Iowa State.

There ought to be a special cave on this board just for people who dislike the Alma Mater.

So does Iowa State get a royalty every time a syndicated re-run is shown?

Not gonna lie I just said that to rile some people up.

I like the song. I don't the timing of it being played during gameday. But I like the song.

Re: Iowa State University Cyclone Varsity Marching Band played the theme song to "Coa

That's not entirely accurate. We did not record the theme song that was used for the bulk of the show. There was a national contest to choose one band to record a live version of the song and subsequently get aired on the show. At a halftime show that season we played a version of the theme song and morphed into a formation that spelled "COACH". That video was sent to Hollywood and we were chosen as the winners. That footage was used over the end credits of 1 episode in the mid '90s. As the winners, ABC TV paid for a cassette single to be produced with the fight song as a B-side (recorded at CY Stephens). Ironically, by the time it aired, Coach Fox had taken the job with the Orlando Breakers in the NFL. Later on, the ISUCF"V"MB director at the time, Roger Cichy, got a walk-on roll in an episode. Not sure if ABC ever caught on to it, but when Cichy arranged the song for our band, he added the last few bars of our fight song as a tag onto the Coach theme song.

Edit: Found a youtube version of the ISUCF"V"MB version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhTPeov9mMA

Wasn't that coach supposed to mirror Hayden Fry or something?

His character was named Hayden Fox. So I'd say the answer to your question is **** no.

If you had post #14 in the "when will Iowa be brought up in each thread" pool, PM Jeremy to see what you've won!

Coach (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The series was originally intended to reflect the University of Minnesota, although the school would later retract its support. The creator and producer of the show, Barry Kemp, an alumnus of theUniversity of Iowa paid homage to his alma mater by naming the main character of Coach (Hayden Fox) after the University of Iowa's long-time football coach Hayden Fry. Many of the exterior shots of "Minnesota State" are actually of the University of Iowa, usually of students walking around the Iowa Memorial Union in downtown Iowa City. The screen shot when returning from commercial breaks is of the outside of the Hillcrest dormitory. There are also numerous shots of Quadrangle Residence Hall as well as the Field House, which once served as the venue for University of Iowa basketball.

There were tons of copies of the cassette tape given to the marching band, I have a few of them floating around my house. Both my husband and I were in the band the year we recorded the Coach theme.
