Centurylink now jacking up their prices no longer giving promotional discounts, so I am paying double now. Time to shop around, what are my options in Des Moines? I use a Roku for TV, and a couple laptops, not a gamer or anything like that, have a 8 year old modem (Actiontec Q1000) that maxes out at 13 mbps, so may be time for a new modem too since 20 mbps seems to be the new standard. I typically have bought modems off Craigslist in the past, so probably will do the same. So advice on modems would be great too

Pretty much either Mediacom or CL. If you want one that works, stay with CL. If you want cheaper, go with Mediacom.

But yes, upgrade your router. I have a TP-Link C7 that was around 80 bucks or so and I have no issues running the speed I pay for from the basement through the second story. No issues cutting out all the time anymore either.

But the FCC told us if we have a problem with the antics of our ISP's we should just go find a different one. That would mean I have at least 5 choices right?

That being said, I use mediacom because it is the only high speed provider available to me. CL cannot do more than 1.5M. But Mediacom is pretty stable and only fails once in a great while.

I'm "stuck" with mediacom since Cl refuses to lay fiber in our neighborhood... I've actually had really good luck with Mediacom though.
