IF Tirell is right

I think that Marty genuinely wants to break this story. It has become his short term mission and I am OK with that. However, I wonder:
-Is Jamie leaking specific information to specific donors to see who he can trust and who he can't?
-Are Jamie and the core group of insiders "working" the local media? I would personnally enjoy having a little fun with some of the local celebrities.

It seems that Cyclone fans are wound pretty tight right now; looking for some good news to hang our hat on. A buddy of mine at work just about exploded today when Mike Stoop's name came out. If I were Marty or Miller or Miller, I would tread very lightly on message boards right now. I did "appreciate" Marty's comparison to Red Sox fans; complimenting the passion that ISU fans have for thier teams.

I definitely agree with this. It is like a soap opera around here. I never thought we would be on the receiving end of so much crap, and then have it legitimized nationally. Honestly, this coaching search to me is way more drama filled than last one, and I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. I also don't think it is a bad thing that we are the only BCS school with a job opening. A lot of these names being floated around are pretty exciting. I disagree with M&M saying that there aren't that many good coaches this time. Just my opinion I guess...but I'm just trying to float a little optimism out there so people have fun.

M&M have claimed, in the past, to have bombshell information about Iowa that they have kept under their hats, apparently in deference to the Iowa athletic department.

JDM: That particular instance was not in deference to Iowa. It was playing by the book on a hard news story with issues that were very volatile, and if the book wasn't followed, you were talking about potential legal ramifications. In the end, it came out, once matters were a part of the public record. And most every major news outlet in the state of Iowa had the same information, and chose to handle it the exact same way as KXNO; waiting for it to be a matter of public record, once the family of the alleged victim was willing to go on the record, and not before. The only difference was that those media outlets didn't say or write in their mediums that they had some pretty heavy stuff, but management didnt want them to talk about it until proper protocol had been followed.

But a coaching search that JP wants to keep under wraps is ok to break into? JDM: A coaching search is the holy grail of talk radio, IMO. Some folks choose to do things different ways. Some folks call and talk to sources, and cite them. Some folks aggregate what everyone else is saying, add a little of their own spice to it, and wrap it up in a neat little package saying 'here is what I am hearing'. Some folks throw gas on a fire. None of those things is potentially slanderous, libellous, etc.

There are different books for different genres of 'stories'. I know that may sound convenient, but its the way it is. As for JP wanting to keep something under wraps, many stories that are broken are stories that athletic departments don't want written or talked about. Jamie said he was not going to publicly comment on the coaching search until he named a coach. He didn't say 'please don't write anything about it or don't talk about it' because he knows he would be wasting his breath. Any AD that would expect the news media to say 'OK, we know you want to do this search under the radar, so we will write and talk about the Iowa Energy for the next week', is naive. Jamie's not naive. He just said don't call me asking me questions, because I won't talk with you about it. That's how it is with searches. And that's why most of the speculation is wrong.

And are 13, 8, DMR, etc, talking about or writing about the search? Yes, they are. Garman has a blog on the topic tonight, in fact.

If Jamie Pollard thinks that Stoops is "the man" I would certainly support that decision.
However, (and I really can't quite put my finger on it) I can't help but think that given the gravity of this decision/hire, that Jamie has someone that he will, or has tried to retain, that has some real "pizazz" to their name. Does that mean some NFL experience? A re-entry in to coaching after some time off? I don't know.
I would be floored, if Jamie allowed this name to circulate this prominently after the way the process was handled previously.

Go Cyclones:yes:

eh maybe I was off the handle a bit, but I know you personally have claimed in the past that you are not a journalist, but it sure seems like journalism to me.

When I say that I am not a journalist, I apply that through my eyes of what I think a journalist is. I think that perspective means a lot, and perhaps you and I have a different perspective on it.

When I think of journalists, I think of Edward R. Murrow, I think of Tom Witosky, I think of guys that make a living every day out of investigating stories, triple checking sources, working on stories for days and sometimes weeks at a time, and then coming out with a story that is top to bottom in depth and just freaking rock solid.

Perhaps, in this day and age, that is an old fashioned view of the word. There usually isn't enough time, and competition for 'breaking it' has eroded a lot of the investigative process.

Citing unnamed sources was taboo, once upon a time. But now, you are more likely to find stories like that than not.

I guess I practice journalism as it was taught to me when there are hard news stories. I definitely make a mental note to follow the book, by the rules, when its hard news.

But on the radio, I am more of a commentator after a story is out there, giving my opinions, because someone thinks my opinions are worthy enough to be shared over the radio. That might not always be the case.

Online and in my magazine, I am mostly an opinion columnist, an analyst. Not a ton of hard news. But when its there, I go by the book, too.

So again, I think it comes down to what your perspective is regarding what a journalist is. I guess at times I do slow down and follow the book. But at other times, its opinion based, and I try not to fly off the handle.

So if you, or others think that is some sort of a convenient way to not call ourselves journalists, you of course are entitled to that opinion. But to me, that's just a label. I focus more on what the story is, what type of story it is, and that is going to determine how I handle it.

Jon I appreciate your comments and insight a lot.

But you just put Edward R. Murrow and Tom Witosky in the same sentence, seriously?

Murrow brought down a man who was hell bent on ripping the United States apart, destroying it looking for the Reds, a great man and great journalist.

Tom Witosky uses his bowl of Alpha Bits to find leads

This is kinda silly. We all want the info and almost everyone wants what is best for ISU - no need to sling mud over who is right, who got the wrong info and who was first.

We've all be right/wrong/first/late at one time or another.

Here is the thing; with very fluid things like coaching searches, you can talk to all of the right sources and have information that is up to date, and be very much on the right track...and an hour later, be totally irrelevant and eventually, not get it right.

These things have so many twists and turns, its one of the hardest things to be 'right' about.

That being said, and as I stated before, I was right next to Marty this AM when he was working the phones, I know who he was speaking to, and they are very solid sources. I also know that Marty went out of his way to seek counsel on what to do with the information, regarding, thinking through the process of how to report it fairly and in a proper context.

Does he fly off the handle sometimes? Yes, he does, and I am not saying anything here that I would not say to his face. But I know that today, he was being very careful to be as professional as possible related to this story.

Just like Jay Norvell in 2006? He was SURE of that. He's a hack.

:biglaugh: Thanks for that Jon! That sentence gave me a good laugh this evening!

He said it was the 'most influential' booster... To me, that means one person...

Do you really think a big booster would leak info to Marty? There are probaly 4 others that know what is going on Steve M, JPs wife, Pres G, and JP secetary.

Miller, Miller and Marty are all tools that are stuck in one of the smallest markets and there are no pro teams. The only way they get anyone to listen is to start rumors. They don't care about ISU and it is all pretend. God forbid anyone takes what these jokers say as being credible. To their credit, they are a 2 out of ten which ranks them one notch above Cotlar.

Iowa is going to a bowl game and Miller is here defending his employer and his so called profession. Wow, just wow.

I doubt Jamie even has told his wife, maybe the Pres but not his wife
