I would've loved to watch Stinson develope under Larry, and Curtis was the definition of a Larry Eustachy player...I really enjoyed watching ISU basketball under Floyd and Eustachy, but all things being said, I am very happy Greg McDermott is now our coach.

A lot of people forget that Stinson and Blalock comitted to ISU when Larry was still the head coach. I agree, I would loved to have seen what those 2 guys could have done plus Clark too if he still comitted the next year under Larry. Larry would have loved Clark's defensive abilities like GMac has used him and I think Larry would have not let Stinson play like the out of control player he was at times. He allowed a degree of that with Tinsley but he was also not scared to bench him either when he didn't settle down and just run the offense.

It's all hindsight and I'm glad to have McDermott now as I think he'll bring back the style of ball we loved under Orr, Floyd, and Eustachy.

Both Hinrich and Collison were verbally committed to ISU until Floyd left- would have been a big class had he stayed. With that said we still went on to beat Kansas and those two the majority of the games while they were at Kansas.

Hinrich and Collison were 0-4 against ISU before they won a game I think. Hinrich fouled out of all 4 games as well trying to guard Tinsley.

Are you sure about Collison? I know that Hinrich was a commit, but I don't ever remember Collison committing to ISU. My recollection is that NC grew up as a hawkeye fan, but didn't care for the coaching situation in iowa city at the time. Roy Williams made him a priority and was a fixture at his hs games. It would have been tough to land Collison even if Floyd had stayed at ISU.

TF is also the guy who ruined Hilton Magic with his 52-50 games. How dare we hire a coach who wanted to play a little defense and win some road games.

A few things...Tinsley committed here after watching us get pounded by Missouri, and knowing he would immediately be the starting point guard was one of the biggest reasons we landed him. We wouldn't have landed him with Hinrich at the point, and he may have not even considered us. Collison never seriously considered ISU, despite us being on his short list. He would've given Iowa a serious look but they didn't know who their coach was going to be at the time...and one thing that makes me think GMac won't leave here is that he wanted a shot at coaching at the Big 10 or Big 12 level, and to stay close to home...which left ISU and Iowa as his two main possible destinations. I really believe Greg wants to stay instate...

To the topic at hand...in only a few years at ISU, Floyd landed committments from Kelvin Cato, Dedric Willoughby, Marcus Fizer, Gerrod Henderson, C.J Bruhton, and Kirk Hinrich. ISU would've consistantly been a winner had Tim wanted ISU to be his last coaching stop. Larry did want to stay at ISU, and referred to Iowa State as his "Kentucky" or "Duke"...he repeatedly said this would be his last job if it was left up to him, but with the player turnover it was tough to expect consistency under Larry...when he did get the talent, they would win, but it would always be a matter of who would stay and who would go. I would've loved to watch Stinson develope under Larry, and Curtis was the definition of a Larry Eustachy player...I really enjoyed watching ISU basketball under Floyd and Eustachy, but all things being said, I am very happy Greg McDermott is now our coach.

People need to remember that most of the recruiting is done by assistant coaches. TF had an outstanding recruiter (Name escapes me) that he took with him to the Bulls, may still be there in the front office. LE did not get great assistant to recruit until it was to late and he was on the way out. That great recruiter was none other than Wayne Morgan, the guy may not have been the greatest X and O's type coach but he sure could recruit and with him and LE together for a while I think ISU would have build the program back up.

I agree to a certain extent cyprw...most of the recruiting is done by assistants-but ultimately, the recruit is coming to play ball for the head coach. Gar Forman is who Floyd took with him to the Bulls. I also wouldn't say too much about Larry not getting a good recruiting assistant until it was too late...Morgan was a good recruiting asst...but we got Jamaal, Kantrail Horton, Sullivan, and even though they never panned out, Jerome Harper, Ernest Brown, and Chris Alexander before Wayne...one recruit I really wish would've panned out was Justin Holt in Stinson and Blalock's class...he was an absolute stud, and had the talent to be making some big money right now if he wasn't such a headcase.

This might be the wildest "what if" ever. A few clarifications: Collison was never very interested in ISU, Floyd or not. Floyd was the coach that told Eustachy about Tinsley, he probably wouldn't have come here without TF's input. Eustachy was a family man and liked Ames for the family values system he found here. He would have retired from ISU if the barley pop had not clouded his vision. ISU was never anything but a stepping stone to Floyd, took a lot of arm twisting to even get him here.

For alot of coaches the assistants do the recruting, but not always. When Johnny
Orr was here Halihan?? was the X and O's guy and Johnny did alot of the recruting.
Johnny would be up growling at the refs and Halihan would be busy with the boys
getting ready to go. They were an excellent pair to run the team.
