Is anyone a member at Hyperion or have thoughts on the club? My wife and I recently moved to the Johnston area and are thinking about joining but we know very little about the club. We’d qualify for the junior golf membership rate, but don’t know what that cost is.

I play golf pretty regularly and she enjoys laying by pools, so we think we could take advantage of the amenities. Is it a fairly young membership? There seem to be quite a few membership activities which we would enjoy. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts!

Also, I’d doubt it’s a young membership since very few “young people” can afford the $10,000 per year cost.

If you don't know what memberships cost in the metro maybe you shouldn't speak about them.

To the OP, I like Hyperion, not a member there but if you are going to golf a lot I would do it especially if your wife likes a pool scene

Hyperion is a nice club with a nice mix of people. Know quite a few people that belong and they all enjoy it. Only complaint I ever heard was one guy didnt like that the wait staff didnt know what side to stand on when taking orders. Also, welcome to Johnston!!!.

I realize I’m an Iowa fan, but not sure you needed to be a ****. I’m well aware of the costs which is why I responded. Perhaps you need to do some research instead of responding solely to be an ass.

If you think a junior membership costs $10k at Hyperion you are clueless. You were the one attacking the OP to begin with when he just asked a simple question

I was in no way attacking the OP. I just stated that it's probably not a younger crowd. You seem incapable of being civil to non-ISU fans. It's kind of weird.

Des Moines Golf membership is $24K. Wakonda is $10K. Glen Oaks is north of $10K. Hyperion is the cheapest of the bunch, but still pretty expensive.

Lol I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers but I was a member at Wakonda 2013-2016 and that's not even close. Like way off. I know quite a few people that are members at Des Moines Golf and I can guarantee you that number is a long ways off too

Not to derail OP's thread, but we are also looking at clubs in the Metro area. Has anyone heard any good things about Wakonda or even echo valley?

Oh now he's the ass? Accusing the OP of humble bragging, then doubling down by suggesting he isn't really looking for a jr membership makes you the **** head.

I liked Wakonda a lot. It's a really hard course but gets easier the more you play it and learn where to hit it on some holes. The amenities are nice and the people out there are great. The only reason I cancelled my membership was because we weren't using it enough to justify the cost

Appreciate everyone's thoughts. Not trying to humble brag, just get more opinion's before committing cash to it. I was thinking the joining would be around $5k and then ~$500 a month.

I have a friend who's a member there and I've played there quite a few times because he used to have a tournament there every other year. If I lived in Des Moines I'd join. Nice course, nice clubhouse, and nice pool. He's got multiple friends up there who are members and they're all in their mid to upper 40s...which I would consider young.

Junior has $2,000 initiation, $270/month dues. Then there are mandatory annual fees of $80 for lockers, online tee times, & online dining reservations. Have to spend a minimum of $150/quarter on food/beverages. Other than that obviously have to pay for cart, lessons, handicaps, guests, and any storage you want.

Source: I sent them an email back in March inquiring about membership. Turns out I'm not quite rich enough, and with 2 young kids am not able to golf enough to justify it. If you PM me your email address I can forward the PDFs they sent.

That's pretty reasonable compared to the $24k a year Des Moines golf charges ;)

I haven't played there, a former Drake golfer told me he thought the course was kind of boring compared to the other private courses in the metro. Was usually in good condition though.

If you thought Briarwood was close enough, the Junior membership (under 29) was $190/month and $500 initiation. That was in 2017 but pretty cheap.

Glen Oaks JR membership is $7500 initiation paid over several years. $325/month with the service charge. $900 annual golf package. The pool is better. Longer drive but I can get there from Urbandale in about 10 minutes.

They view from the restaurant is great, and their food is really good. And they mix a strong drink.

Bump. Anyone have any updated numbers for Hyperion? I think the wind is blowing me back towards DSM.

Also does anyone know anything or have any experience with Urbandale GCC? Obviously would rather have the 18 holes and setting at Hyperion but half of the deal is pool for the wife and kid and if UGCC is nice enough and provides value I can live with a 9 hole course and a decent pool.

Just throwing it out there that Briarwood became private awhile back and they’re 18 holes with a pool.
