As of 2 AM, Michael is still strengthening and has been upgraded to a Category 4 Hurricane with 130 MPH sustained winds. Landfall in the Florida panhandle near Panama City is expected this afternoon.

Up to 145 mph wind at 933 mb pressure. Almost category 5 just a few hours from landfall... This would be one of the strongest landfalling hurricanes in US history...

Where they love the governor
Surprised I haven't heard as much coverage on this one.

I've been following just due to potential impacts to me. Really blew up. And apparently, there are lots of people down there who are refusing to evacuate.

Good news is that it appears to be moving quickly, so that should have a reduced flooding threat as compared to Harvey or Florence.

Makes me not quite so bitter about the drippy, dreary weather WE'VE had for the past week. It could be much, much worse.

Why did Florence seem to be in the news for two weeks and this just kind of appeared?

That one started out strong but then decreased as it got closer. This one did just the opposite. I'm actually getting kind of concerned about this one, less lead time not a good thing for the folks who live down there.

Another reason I hate to say could be east and west coast biases in the media. The east and west are higher media markets than the south and north. Hopefully I'm wrong in this and it's just how quickly it ramped up.

I'm going to assume the large ramp up has a lot to do with the warm water in the Gulf. I think I read some place that it is above normal temps for this time of year.
