(Stupid rant, sorry)
This always seems like a weird question for a server to ask. Not sure why, but I always cringe at this common service question at restaurants. Other variations of simply checking in with their guests/customers are very welcome, but maybe asking how things are tasting is a little too personal to me. Not sure how to respond if something is not to my liking. Am I to say “not the best” or “could be better”? Just seems disingenuous to say “fine”, when it’s not and anything else just seems awkward. Help

If it's really bad tell them you've had better at the state penitentiary. ;)

I think the main intention is to check and make sure proteins are cooked to the right temperature and you have all the correct sides and such. I wouldn't tell them that the flavor is bland.

At one place we frequent, the person who brings out our food asks some variation of “Anything else I can grab for you?” after setting the plates on the table.

I'm sure they have to aak for various reasons (business transactions, etc) but when I get take out or something that's likely not going to be returned I just want to reply 'Nope, I'm sure it's gonna be delicious' when asked if I want a receipt.

Not exactly sure.
Last night the server was one of those touchy, feelly types. Every time she swung by she had to put her hand on my upper arm and then talk to us. Unless this is the backseat of the Greyhound, just ask the question.
