Looks like the hospital split ours up in to mom & baby costs:

mom: $5,500
baby: $2,300

it was a standard delivery ... from we were in the hospital for ~ 60 hours when it was all said and done. (check in to check out)

but I'm guessing there's other costs coming ... our family doctor stopped in, an I'm guessing he's not free. Then there are followup checkups for mom and baby coming up

If she got an epidurrel (sp?) that will be on there, as well as the anasthiesologist.

You will not need to take your newborn to a dentist for quite a while, but it may still be worth getting dental insurance for something unforeseen such as getting a tooth knocked out. Our dentist has already said he won't see our child until he is 3. Some people have said your child needs to go to a dentist at 1 year to 1 1/2 years, not true. Some children don't even have teeth by then or very few teeth. Just check with your dentist on this.

As for money out of your pocket for the delivery of the little one, you'll probably be okay as long as you have $2500.00 set aside. Then make sure you've got money saved for your co-pays at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months and for random visits to the doctor for ear infections, colds, and stomach bugs.

$1500 for birth and first year? :biglaugh:

Unless you have AWESOME insurance you will blow by that in your sleep. My insurance doesnt cover 'well' visits and I just got the bill for the 3 month shots - $600.

Your company should offer an open enrollment one time a year that you can adjust your coverages and add or delete dependants. You should be able to add dental in a couple of years when the premiums make sense to pay vs. paying a couple hundred in premiums a year for a $100 dental bill otherwise.

Water births in the family bathtub with mid wives are cheaper. No work permit is required.

They cover 90% after the deductible.

It's a little different because we have a high deductible plan with a built in amount applied to a debit card.

basically:

$3000 deductible
90/10 copay after that up to $6000

but,
$1500 is applied to a debit card every 6 months - currently my balance on that is ~ $1k. get another $1,500 in July. That balance can carry over year after year.

the flex dollars would be in addition to that.

We took my daughter to a pediatric dentist at 2 after reading in some places that they should go at 6 months. She didn't even have teeth at that age.
The one we took her to in Ankeny was very good and I think cost around $90. Now she can't wait to go back on her third birthday.
