Way up there
yes there would be money, while football makes the most money for the University, it also costs the most, by far. Schools like Marquette, Villanova, and Georgetown, while in the big east don't have football programs. They survive.

All private institutions....and Villanova has a football program. They are in the former 1AA,whatever the heck its called now.

Perhaps this has been addressed elsewhere. How many Iowa State fans stop being Iowa State fans if or when NU and U of M enter the Big Pick Your Favorite Number conference? If the worst happens and we end up in a Mountain West type conference, how many bail rather than see us play Colorado State rather than the huskers?
You are geographically disconnected from the MWC. In that regard you would be a much better fit with the MAC

honestly, i don't buy into too much of this expansion talk, however if we were somehow dropped from a major conference, i would say drop football, pour all of our money into our basketball program and make it as best as possible. I'll take some heat for saying that, but i just don't think i would follow an Iowa State football program if it were say in the MAC conference and played the toledo and ohio of the world. However, a basketball team can still thrive by itself. Schools like creighton, memphis, even in small conferences you can reach great national basketball success, not the case in football.

We'd have to drop a lot of non-revenue sports programs without football, or the Iowa legislature would have to pick up the tab. We need football. There will be a league for ISU, Kansas, K-State, Texas Tech, TCU, Tulsa, UNI(?), Memphis.

It seems, though, that some type of PAC 10-Big 12 remnants league is inevitable. Pac 10 will have a tough time competing against the Central and Eastern Time Zone teams for prime time coverage without it, and there will still be at least five former Big 12 teams left over after it's all done.

I posted a similar thread to this last night. I could see alot of ISU fans starting to have a rooting interest for Iowa as they would be the face of the state of Iowa. They would still be ISU fans, but would have a rooting interest in Iowa.

Program revenues would drop if we went MWC. In football, Bowl hookups might mean only a 8-4 team would go bowling. In bball, three teams might go to NCAA. You may not drive to Utah to watch a game...

I think its been a few years since even a 7-5 team did not make a bowl game, so thats not an issue. Lower revenue bowls might be an issue, but not missing out on making one.

I have a "rooting interest" in the hawks now...I root against them always.

you ever seen how fired up our basketball fans are when creighton comes to Hilton? It is AWESOME. Can't imagine how awesome it would be if Ohio U came calling.

I don't love ISU because we are in the Big 12. I love ISU because I went there and I'm Clone to the Bone. So, I will not be jumping ship.

wait, what? Have I missed something? I had no idea the Big 10 was thinkin about expansion.:jimlad:

Regardless, I do not care if we are playing Morningside in the NAIA every year, I am a Cyclone. Besides I got friends who play football there and they legitimately thought they could beat us a couple years ago, seriously. I then responded that their offensive linemen look like our safties...

In all seriousness I am not the least bit worried that we are going to be hurting in ten years.
