People use it for everything. Actually misuse.
It's a point/counterpoint thing. If someone counteracts your point with a point you believe is better.
Dude 1 "Iowa is the best team ever."
Dude 2 "Iowa State is the best team ever."
Dude 1 "Ah, touche."

When in Rome ...

Does that hold true if the 1st one isn't a valid point at all?

I mean, Dude 1 in your example is just plain stupid. :jimlad:

But doesn't "Illini' refer to the indian tribe after which the team is named? And doesn't the word "tribe" inherently mean more than one person? Can you be in a tribe of one?

Not sure. If you say Sitting Bull was a Sioux, is it singular since your talking about one person? Or plural in that you're referring to him as a member of a tribe?

I love how a sports trivia thread has become a grammar thread. Can we branch this into other areas such as you're/your, than/then, except/accept, and they're/their/there?

Back to the task at hand. "The Thundering Herd" of Marshall. There is only one herd.

Milikin Big Blue
Dartmouth Big Green
Cornell Big Red
Denison Big Red

The Bethany, Bucknell, Gallaudet, Howard, Nichols, North Dakota State and Oklahoma Baptist Bison. (there are apparently the Harding and Lipscomb Bisons - I thought Bison was both)

Alverno College Blaze

Wellesley Blue

Presbyterian Blue Hose

Ok - sorry I cheated

My favorites (plural or not)

- Long Beach State Dirtbags (baseball)
- College of Atlantic Black Flies
- Simon Frazier Clan (ouch)
- Evergreen State Geoducks (anyone who saw that episode on Dirty Jobs knows why this is funny)
- Whittier College Poets
- Arkansaas Tech Wonderboys

I believe I always heard the trivia was the number D1 football teams that don't end in an 's' as oppose to plural.

Fighting Illini, Fighting Irish, Stanford Cardinal, Tulane Green Wave, Orange Men, Harvard Crimson, etc.
