Calling Eastern Iowa Clones. My wife and I are planning a bathroom remodel and we are looking for recommendations. This will pretty much gut a very small bathroom and finish off a utility room. Will involve all new fixtures as well as moving some walls/door. In the past we've used Lane Stark-Master Carpenter. Very good, great work but pretty spendy. Looking for recommendations. Will probably get quote from Hometown restyling. Anyone here use them before for inside projects?

Seems to me you have your contractor unless someone comes up with a killer recommendation. Every time you hire someone you haven't worked with before it's a dice throw as to whether they are going to be any good or not.

Josh Nguyen, New Image construction.

Did a bath remodel for my biz partner couple years ago - when there was a problem, he came back, ripped it all out, and re-did the ENTIRE thing because he wasn't happy with his work. No addl charges.

Did a monster 3 level deck for same guy. Did our replacement 3-season porch and siding after the derecho. Nice guy, veteran, decent cost overall. Some typical contractor stuff - can go radio silent sometimes, it will always take longer than it was supposed to. But good experience overall. I need to do siding at our new place soon, will call him first.

Never used Hometown, but have heard they are REALLY expensive.

be a man. do it yourself
It is tempting. I have found in my personal life that even things I would love to do and am capable of doing myself, sometimes it is better just to hire out. Because there are people that can a) do it better and b) can do it faster than me. I already put in my 40+ hours a week at my job. Finding the time to work on bigger projects at home is not easy or even feasible depending on a person's situation. If the wife wants a bathroom now, she might not be ok with the dawdling around working on it for an hour here or an hour there while the house is all partially a construction zone and then finally having the bathroom a year or two later than when she wanted it.

That's my problem, but it causes me a lot of discomfort paying for things that I know I can do myself. As I get older though, doing things myself might cause me more discomfort lol.

Same. I don't mind the hard work aspect, but if it is just awful work, or its complicated enough I might make things worse, then I am out.

Yeah, on some of the more complex stuff, I've ended up spending half of what I saved on tools. Not that having a lot of tools is a bad thing, but some of those more specialized tools will likely never be used again.

I can recommend you do NOT call Mad City. Hometown is expensive but they do decent work and, more importantly, actually show up. I wouldn't use them if you can find a viable and reliable alternative, however, due to cost.

I have a tool rental place, and I try to use that before buying a specialized tool.
