Wyoming (2-1) as a team that scored lots of points averaging 87 per game. They are led by Kayla Woodward (5'11") and Marquelle Dent (5'7") who average 16 and 15 points per game respectively. Woodward can hit the three and more likely compares to our Brynn Williamson than anyone else. Woodward is also their leading rebounder at nine per game. It's obvious she will be a focal point of our defensive effort. Their free-throw shooting is comparable to ours as well. They are shooting at a slightly better percentage (77%) than we are (74%). Dent is their floor leader with 22 assists, only six turnovers and also five steals. Where these two women go, their team goes.
The St. Mary's Gaels (2-1) are the host school of the tournament. they are led by four players averaging double figures - Lauren Nicholson (6'0" - 15ppg), Shannon Mauldin (5'9" - 15ppg), Hayle Hendrickson (6'0" - 13ppg), and Stella Beck (6'0" - 11ppg). Surprisingly, considering the point averages, they are not a three-point shooting team having hit only six on the season. Their starting five are good free-throw shooters and, it seems unusual to keep saying this, as a team they are shooting better than Iowa State at the line. It's very obvious that this group plays as a team. Not only are the points spread around, the rebounds are spread around with the starting five all grabbing them on a regular basis. They have a startling +17 rebounding margin on their opponents. One thing to note is that they are not particularly adept at taking care of the ball as they have 69 turnovers as compared to 43 assists. This is a game that I believe will depend on the tenacity of our defense. That means slowing down the scoring and blocking out on rebounds. I also believe that they will have trouble with our size inside and out. If Bre has a strong game it could get interesting early. The big differentiator is our three-point shooting capability and their inability to hit the three.
