I was in the Armory today and decided to go up the steps into the stands. Once I got up there I imagined what it would be like for a basketball game there, but then came up with the idea to play ISU hockey in the Armory once the design studios are off of the playing surface. The building is dark, its dingy, it kinda smells, and it just seems like a perfect setting for hockey at Iowa State, whether it is ISU Club Hockey, or if we ever make the step up to the NCAA D1 level. Thoughts?

Great idea, and I agree- it would be a neat setting. Unfortunately, there are WAY too many administrators at Iowa State who want the Armory or the land it sits on. That is about as prime of real estate as it gets on campus without having a solid plan for the future, and I can tell you seven different plans that I know about for that site. ISU club hockey isn't one of them, and Pollard has already made it clear that he never intends to make us move up to NCAA hockey.

I'd rather use it for volleyball/wrestling, if anything. But I doubt they will get in there anytime soon.

What are those 7 different plans?

I got to go to some bball games in the armory and from what I can remember it was louder than Hilton ever has been. The students would pound their feet on the metal bleachers and it was deafening. Probably the building itself kept the noise in as well.

me too cybirdie - the armory rocked....

Some of those fond memories:

The smell of mold
The all nighters
Walter Toporek, the crazy canadian
Drinking 2 liters of Mountain Dew to keep ur eyes open
The smell of Solder, Glue, Spray Fix, liquid nails, wax, etc etc

It was a blast....

The plan is to destroy the Armory, or at least part of it and rebuild. It will never be used as a arena again and the power that is needed to heat that dome is incredible.

The structure that will be built in it's place will be for the DPS/ ROTC, however, due to a more efficient use of space, there will likely be other departments in there as well or two buildings may be built there instead of one.

This will actually happen sooner than some of you may think. Two years ago they were already working out the plans and logistics for replacing the armory once Design is completed. Being that it is for DPS and ROTC, funding will likely be provided by the state legislature.

I like it, that is a really cool idea having games at the Armory! The old ice arena was a really loud dingy place.

Too bad it will never happen...

It was a great place for basketball games and even finer for wrestling meets. I remember going to the Big 8 Conference meet there when I was in school and the ISU noise from the metal bleachers was great to help intimidate other wrestlers. Hard to do that to a wrestler but is sounded great.

Wasn't DPS supposed to be relocated to the new intermodal facility if it goes through?
