I don’t even accept friend requests anymore because I assume it is a hacker. Facebook has some of the worst security. Accounts get hacked all of the time.

UPDATE!

I'm totally screwed. The hacker of course posted using my account selling a bunch of vehicles, motorcycles, campers, etc. I've had family and friends some reaching out to say I've been hacked and some wanting to more info on the vehicles! This is why this **** works...

Main thing on Facebook is he changed the email and cell number on my account. Even last night the account got suspended because I had enough people report the post. I got an email last night saying my account was hacked and here is a code to recover...Great I thought! Wrong...code doesn't work.

Hacker of course got the same email and code and he somehow was able to recover the account lol. So he was back to posting this morning! So I have no ability to get into the account...and the hacker now has the ability to recover it when it gets suspended.

Facebook is a ******* joke. I would be more than happy to be rid of it but unfortunately I've got tons and tons of my kids pictures, memories...you name it. All gonna be lost. It sucks hard.

Walk away from Facebook. It's bad. You shouldn't use it. Neither should anyone else.
If someone else is reading this thread, download what ever you want to have access to, then close your account and walk away.

FYI: Those aren't your kids pictures, or your memories. Once you uploaded them to Facebook, they belong to Facebook to do what they please with them. I'm sorry this happened to you, but trying to get back on Facebook is not the path forward. See if one of those Facebook acquaintances can can see your account and help you download whatever you want and then abandon your Facebook account and walk away.

You assume it’s a “he”. Could be a “she” too. Leave no stone unturned.

Doesn't matter. Facebook will do NOTHING. Cousin got hacked and lost access and finally just gave up and created a new account. FB is so big that it has no actual customer support because it doesn't consider us "customers", they make their money off of ads and don't even police them for scams (and a HIGH percentage are just open today and gone tomorrow scammers).
This. Same thing happened to me. Hacked, changed email and password and I had absolutely no recourse as FB said I couldn’t prove it was my original account. There is no customer service at all. It’s maddening. I was off FB for a year and just recently started a new account with my mobile phone (wasn’t attached to old account). Sorry this happened, it’s such a violation of privacy and if you’re like me, you lost years of memories.

Edited to add it was nice being off FB for a year. Agree with others on this. But I missed the groups (high school class, dementia support for aging parents) and only returned to join a new support group that was only offered on FB. I guess it was the community part that brought me back. I don’t post anything anymore and kept my friends to a minimum.

Did you not get the original email notifying you that the email address was changed? That was your way to reverse this.

This prick got into my facebook...changed the account email and cell number to my account. Now of course he's posting as me and "selling cars his sick uncle" has before he goes into a home.

I'm not able to access the account due to the email and mobile number being changed and Facebook doesn't seem to have a call center or help. So I have zero access to do anything.

WTF am I supposed to do?? Anybody have any experience with this crap?
First mistake was still having Facebook. What is it 2009?

In all seriousness, hope you get this resolved.

They occasionally will delete a duplicate account spoofing or mimicking someone but even that's spotty even if a number of people report it. Best way to avoid attention and interest of hackers is to maintain a low profile and don't make you posts public and don't post in open public groups. Most of the groups I belong to aren't public.
Ive reported so many scams, and always get... "we didnt remove the post you reported" Blah blah. These are obvious scams and or obvious violations, and they dont care. Even if you appeal their decision.

The problem is with the demise of local news and newspapers, FB is about the only way to get local news and information. Community and neighborhood news, School and other local event, all use FB to share the content and information. In some cases if you dont have FB you wont get the information for things like sports sign up deadlines etc.

I hate FB as much as the next guy, but I also know 90% of the information and news about local issues and events are only published there.

Ok. There are two methods of recourse that I am aware of. All of their posted steps are worthless. Recovery email, backup address, close friends. None of it will work.

6 years ago my wife's facebook was taken over. She was distraught due to all of the pictures and memories on it from college through the birth of two of our children. I spent hours trying to use the formal recovery mechanisms over the next month or so including a lot of texts to her friends to get them to sign in and acknowledge the "close friends" prompts. Finally we just gave up, and she opened a new account. Then, in 2021, the account went active again. It dawned on me that I should check if any of my former interns now worked at Facebook. Low and behold one did. He was able to get her account reset so that I could access it. I actually had to go back to him to do it again because the ******* who took it over snatched it back before I could set up 2FA. It's a pain in the ass trying to parse the Arabic version of the site to figure out how to set it back to English. I realize this approach required a personal connection, but maybe you do know someone.

The second approach that I have heard about requires you to purchase a MetaQuest VR headset. Because it is a tangible consumer facing product, Facebook actually has a contact number for it. Once you get a hold of them, you need to explain that you can no longer access your account (which is needed to activate the device).

Good luck.

Your account is probably screwed. This happened to my wife and we never got it back

Some suggestions

0- (edit) dig through your old emails and see if FB sent you a message that sounds like "did you mean to change your password" or "did you really want to change your email". If you find a message, use the link to try and get the account back.

1- Do you have any important pics that only exist in this FB account? If so, have your spouse or a friend download them so you have a copy.

2- Think about anything sensitive you ever sent in a FB chat. Ever send a password to your spouse? Login creds to something important? Get those passwords changed ASAP.

3- Have your spouse, friends, mistress, or anyone else ever messaged you something of a sensitive nature? If so, have them unsend the message. There are browser plugins where they can unsend everything in one shot (although it takes time). If you sent something sensitive from your account, well, you are F'd there.

4- Enable multi factor authentication on absolutely everything

5- Once you have downloaded stuff from your profile you want to keep, ask friends to report the profile as a fake, and to comment on car ads to let them know it isn't you. The hacker wants your friends to venmo them a down payment on a car that seems like an awesome deal. Every response will be "send me an IM"

6- FB has a web site where you can try to get your account back from a previously trusted device using your old password, but it never worked for us. The secret sauce for the hacker was changing the email address on the account.

Good luck. I did have a friend recently report that they did get their account back, but I think your odds are less then 1 in 20.

Our research also uncovered the VR headset hack. Amazing that FB is one of the largest companies on the planet, yet has no real customer support for their primary product.

H
Facebook has fine customer support actually. Their customers are their companies they sell advertising space to and those they sell personal data too. You aren't Facebook's customer. You are their product.

This seems like a popular hack on FB with the selling fake items. Probably a bunch of people in some hacker office in India.

Yep, saw it happen in my neighborhood - seemed crazy to me cause I knew THAT guy posting something like that for THAT price was "too good to be true". I also try to comment a warning anytime random accounts post sold out tickets on a random news article for a highly sought after event - do people not realize that's highly unlikely to be legit?!

Also how the hell do you "get hacked" exactly? Without clicking on a nefarious link, how could you really lose access to your account? I feel like most people who have been "hacked" either don't remember or don't want to admit that they clicked a link somewhere along the way.

Yeah you normally don’t just get hacked out of nowhere. Usually a link click or a number give out or something similar to that
