When he played a concert at the Des Moines Civic Center several years ago, my wife and I managed to get pretty decent seats down toward the front. After the concert ended and everyone began filing out, I suggested to my wife that we take the exit close to the front that nobody else was taking.

When we walked out the door, I noticed we were on the opposite side of the building where everyone else was coming out and James Taylor was sitting on the sidewalk in a chair next to his tour bus, right there in front of us! I was stunned and without thinking I walked up to him and told him I've been a lifelong fan of his. He was so gracious. He smiled, shook my hand, and he genuinely thanked me for coming to his concert.

That was one of my greatest brushes with fame.

In 1978 (I think), I took my first passenger trip on a train from LA to some point in the midwest (I forget, maybe Kansas City). I had a sleeper and a cassette of James Taylor's "Gorilla" to accompany me as I crossed the great West including the mesas in New Mexico. He's done great work throughout his career but I think the following Carole King song is my favorite. Taylor's contribution was to make the song his own as say, Mary Travers did with Leaving on a Jet Plane, or Patsy Cline did with Crazy.

That's my least favorite song on that album. :-D

From that album, I retain a great fondness for "Machine Gun Kelly" (the song, not the gangster or the current tattoo-ridden C-lebrity of the same name who sings)

I’m a big James Taylor fan. Too many good ones to choose. I like the videos of them at squibnocket. Think Mexico and your smiling face are a couple of my favorites.

Have to say that I also enjoy his cover of Sam Cook's "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha".
