We need at least one guard to be able to hit the college three point shot. Dedric used to be awesome. When you have to drive the lane at the end of the game bercause you cannot shoot the three, it makes it easier on the opponent.

And, no, Jake Sullivan was not consistent enough in the clutch at thye end of the game when he forced the three, because he could not jump high enough over the defenders. Sorry, Jake.

An inside threat would be nice at the end of the game.

The truth is LE and TF did a horrible job of recruiting and retaining quality guards during the last two years of each of their coaching careers at ISU. [/b][/quote]

I would agree that TF ran into a ton of trouble in his recruiting once it seemed like he was looking to move on and ran players off.

LE was able to recruit quality guards - Tinsley, Morgan, Sullivan, Power, Barnes, Stinson, Blalock, etc but he just wasn't able to keep kids at ISU. It just wasn't a problem with guards. If I recall correctly, about 45% of the kids that LE recruited and enrolled at ISU during his tenure transferred. That doesn't even include kids like Jerome Harper or Earnest Brown who signed LOI's but never made it to campus. That kind of instability is a recipe for disaster.

One thing I hope that G-Mac can do is bring stability to ISU's hoops program. A school like ISU needs to have kids around for 3-4 years to contend for Big 12 Championships.

Floyd was a great recruiter and coach. The last year he was there recruiting suffered because of all the bulls Rumors.
Floyd Recruits:
Stevie Johnson
Marcus Fizer
Martin Rancik
Kelvin Cato
Dedric Willoughby
Mike Nurse
C.J. Brutan ----I understood Gene Smith dropped the ball on his appeal.
Paul Shirley
Shawn Bankhead
etc.

I understand your point, but let's clear up a few things here. Horton was recruited by LE to play at S. Utah and then followed LE to ISU but redshirted after he bacame eligible the second semester of LE's first year. Stinson and Blalock were indeed recruited by LE, but LE wasn't bringing in guards of this quality before WM came into the picture. And while Shane Power was a good guard and a quality person, he left ISU in his prime because, using your words, "LE was an a-hole." The truth is LE and TF did a horrible job of recruiting and retaining quality guards during the last two years of each of their coaching careers at ISU.

I don't disagree that we had a lack of quality guards (relatively speaking) during that timeframe, though it never seemed to me to be due to some recruiting deficiency. It really seemed to me to be just run of bad luck. It seems like they continued to have quality guards lined up but they kept falling through. I thought you just made it sound like TF and LE somehow didn't understand the importance of the backcourt and didn't try to land quality guards and that GM somehow magically solves that. Regardless, I understand your point now as well.

Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy were both great coaches. Both came to ISU highly regarded and both acomplished great things soon after they arrived. But then TF caught "NBA fever" or more likely he had it when he arrived. And LE, I think partially because of the blow up on national TV and partly because he liked beer was never able to attract quality recruits after that blow up. So I am looking for some stability, and 4-6 quality guards on scholarship at all times under McDermott's leadership when he gets established.

I think a large part of LE's recruiting woes was that his best assistant coaches kept getting head coaching jobs elsewhere. Don't underestimate the impact of losing Barnes, Carrol, and Perry. Assitant coaches are almost always the point men in recruiting. When one leaves, for whatever reason, it affects recruiting adversely. Give LE credit for seeing that recruiting wasn't going where it should and hiring WM. Morgan was hired by LE to recuit and he did that well. People can spin it how they like, but in my eyes Blaylock and Stintson were LE recruits. Morgan did play a large role in bringing in the east coast kids, but he was hired by LE and was LE's assistant.
