Gottlieb's ISU comments

IMO, our non conference schedule will matter only if we struggle down the stretch. If we can win 10-11 conference games, and one in the tourney, that stuff won't matter. The one caveat would be if we are limping into the post season. The tournament committee will look at the back half of the season much more than the front. If we could somehow manage to win 4 games from the other top 4 and only drop 1-2 from mid league teams, I think we are fine.

I think if we go .500 the rest of the year, and finish 20-11, we'll be in a good position going into the conference tourney. But I hope that 12-6 conference record happens. The way we've played on the road(despite what Gottlieb says) will help us a ton with the committee. We've played great in all 3 conference road games. You can beat every ranked team at home, but if you get blown out in every road game, you're not getting in. A team that can't win on the road doesn't translate to NCAA tourney success.

Won't make tourney is an opinion. ISU controls own destiny.
White is a beast.
Losing to a bottom feeder on road is an opinion. Understandable after struggling at home against OSU.
Drake and UNI losses are bad.
The good thing is, ISU controls their own destiny.

As does every other team at this point with the exception of Ivy League teams not named Harvard.

I'll take your guys' word for it that he said that but it's a little disappointing coming from him and he may be smarting a little from losing to us. Usually I think he's one of the better analyst/commentator/experts out there and don't mind the ugly truths, but I just can't agree with some of that.

I really don't like the "will fail to beat the bottom dwellers on the road" comment for a couple of reasons.

One because this squad has done nothing to deserve this analysis. Their +24 point average on the road to Big 12 "bottom feeders" proves this.

But the bigger reason is it is just another one of those talking head tricks that they use to always be right. It is doubtful that any Big 12 team that doesn't win it all will not slip up on the road against at least one team that they should beat. He defines what "bottom feeder" means in this case. It is practically impossible for him to be "wrong" even if ISU plays very well against teams on the road as it is doubtful they will be perfect on the road in those games.

All that aside, I remember him trying to get Fizer ejected in the Big 12 tournament. I want to hate him as an analyst because of hating him as a player, but I have to admit there are a lot worse talking heads out there.

Ok so can we get when these statements were made? IMO if he made them in the last week, he is an idiot and needs to do some research...if he made them 3+ weeks ago then he makes some good points, but so far I think this team is proving him wrong.

Some of those things are true to a certain extent, but it seems a little harsh and biased to me. Also, so far we have blown the Big 12 bottom feeders out on the road. I would give us a 50/50 chance of making the tourney at this point.

2) that tried to pick a fight with Marcus Fizer in the early minutes of a Big XII Tournament semi-final game.
3) that was schooled endlessly by Tinsley, Horton, etc.

Yeah, he brings all sorts of unbiased credibility to any discussion about Iowa State.

But saying we will need 22 wins going into the big 12 tourney isn't true. We didn't get close to that last time we made the tournament, and we got in with a decent seed. And was our non conference schedule any tougher then? I don't think it was. If we have 22 wins going into the conference tourney, we're not talking about if we get in, we're talking about what seed we will get.

It was tougher, only because Iowa and UNI were better then (ISU lost to both)

ISU also beat two ranked Big 12 teams that year.

I forgot about the tournament so I amend my previous statement to include those games.

Look no further than Virginia Tech, PSU, and Colorado recently with teams with good overall records, winning conference records, yet missed the tournament due to poor non-conference play. I stand by my belief that ISU will need 11 or 12 Big 12 wins (including tournament) to get in.

I can see where Gotlieb is coming from with much of this but once again this is one man's opinion. Fran Fraschilla seems to have a different take though..."Saturday is best chance for Cyclones to beat KU since Stinson/Blalock team. The Mayor has a team that I believe will be NCAA-worthy in March." We'll see what happens but I have to believe that Fran has more insight into our team this year because of how much he covers the Big 12.

I think Gotleib is pretty damn good usually. I think he's a little off base on the losing on the road thing, but the rest of it is probably true as of right now. We needd 6 or 7 more wins to make the tourney, which is pretty tough thing to do in the Big 12... Not saying we can't do it, but we still have work to do (which most teams do).

And those of you who say losing to Drake and UNI aren't bad losses... they are. Drake is a TERRIBLE loss and UNI is not as good as usual and isn't a very good loss either.

Either way, I think we are better than what Gotleib says. We're the 4th or 5th best team in this conference. I like our chances to get into the NCAAs.
