Gottlieb's ISU comments

His comments about the defense do not make a lot of sense. I think ISU is sometimes weak on the interior by giving up too many easy bunnies, but the stats do not make it appear that they are letting teams do whatever they want.

In conference games only, ISU is 3rd in the conference in scoring defense, 1st in 3 point fg defense, and 3rd in overall fg defense. They are also first in defensive rebounding.

Right now, I think it is too early to say if the UNI or Drake losses are bad losses. The Valley only has 2 good teams this year, so even if those teams finish in the top half of the league.......it may not mean that much.
I don't think the Drake game was a terrible loss. The team played an in-state rival during their first road game of the season in their second game of the season. If we lost to Drake later in the season I think it would be a worse loss.

I used to be a big Gottlieb fan but he's really become a know-it-all. During one of the halftime shows on Saturday he sat there and rolled his eyes and shook his head the whole time Andy Katz was talking and then argued every point. He looked like a teenager arguing with his parents, just for the sake of arguing. You could tell Katz was thinking "WTF, dude."
I've noticed this too. Used to enjoy his commentary, but its evolved into a thing where he appears to be more interested in conveying how smart he thinks he is instead of just doing his job.

haha he is a tool

Actually I can't knock him. He is one of the lone broadcasting/commentating voices on ESPN with fb or mbb, who is a Big 12 alum and supporter, and mouthpiece

We need Doug G to remain out there

We don't need another Big 10 or east coast cheerleader from ESPN

We need Doug G? That's funny. I have no issue with him but we sure as hell don't need him.

Andy Katz on ESPN U just said Royce White is the most important player in the Big XII and that we'll upset KU on Saturday.

We beat KU on Saturday and they will. Big win >>> bad loss.

If I was Fred, I would put these comments up in the locker room before our game on Saturday. Not that Gotlieb is wrong with his statements, but proving him wrong could make this team play a full 40 minutes.

I think it's going to take more than beating Kansas and finishing above .500 in the Big 12 to get to the dance this year. The selection committee doesn't look kindly on teams with that soft of a non-conference slate, let alone one who lost games with an easy slate.

My guess is ISU will have to finish around 12-6 in the Big 12 with at least two wins over a ranked team. That's still well within the range of possibility but it doesn't leave a lot of margin for error.

We let team score at will in the paint.. not on the perimeter.

1. If he is referring to the rest of the bottom feeders (OU,OSU) he is maybe right.

2. We will have a REALLY hard time making the tournament without any sort of non conference win. So as an outsider I can see this point.

This team is just different, but the one thing about us so far is that we are getting better each week. That has to lead toward optimism. Outsiders see us with ZERO non conference wins and wins over the 4 worst teams in the big 12.

We see us as rising and hopefully winning some big games in the future.

I agree. I would say 12 wins would do it... including wins in the Big 12 tournament.

I think 10-8 plus 2 wins would get us in.

Wow you guys need some perspective. There is a good chance that his comments ring true come season's end. He may still have an Okie state slant, but I guarantee he is MUCH less biased than the posters on this board.

This team has a lot to prove before making the tournament.

Gottlieb is a pretty smart guy, but he definitely comes across as arrogant. I don't know that I can disagree with any of the things he's said...and until we win at OSU and at Oklahoma those losses are absolutely possibilities. With that said, I sincerely hope we grab 2 of the next 3 and make a statement.

yes... we don't need another d-bag Big 10 shill or Dukie Vitale to replace Gottlieb if he left.

How hard is that to understand?

National sports radio guys come across that way. It is because they actually form their own takes on sports.

Our local guys NEVER make takes like that. They just pose questions and let fans duke it out.

Exactly, we do not have any quality wins. Not one. Until we prove we're able to knock off other tournament teams, we don't really have a chance.

- defense lets teams do whatever they want on offense
- won't make the tournament
- White is a beast
- will lose to b12 bottom feeders on road
- weak non con schedule with bad losses to drake and uni

I was about to argue that we don't play Iowa on the road this year. Then I saw the b12 part.

That's really not true though. Sure it would be great to get a couple of quality wins but the selection committee needs to pick 38 at large teams somehow. Once you get down to the last 5 or 6 at large, they all have flaws in their resumes. They either don't have any good wins are they have some really bad losses. If we didn't have a chance without any good wins, no one would be projecting us in the field right now and just about all the projections have us in or just out.

OU embarrassed Kansas State in Norman after having lost at OSU. OSU beats Kansas State at home last Saturday if Page has even an average shooting performance (4-17/1-9). I don't consider either of those road games easy for most if not all B12 teams. OU also hung with KU at home.

The only win that i will guarantee is Tech at home. The rest all scare me to some degree.

I'll add my name to the list of those not offended by any of those comments.

Our defense is improving but I still don't consider it a strength. We need to get tougher and more consistent throughout games. We show flashes of what we could be, and Babb has a been a very pleasant surprise on an individual basis.

To early to say on the tournament. That's his opinion right now.

He's correct on White.

The losing to bottomfeeders on the road is confusing to me. If you consider the bottom 3 or 4 in the conference as bottom feeders, we've already beaten 2 resoundingly. You have to take each game at a time anyway so I'll worry about beating Texas tonight before it's an issue anyway.

Our losses to UNI and Drake are BOTH bad losses and they will probably only get worse as the season wears on. I realize they were early and we're a different team now, but they are both very average teams in a two bid league and one of those losses was at home. If we finish strong enough and put some top 25 wins in our portfolio it will help offset bad losses from December, but they're never going to completely go away. Our non-con shot at redemption was Michigan and we laid and egg there as well.
