I am jealous! Although I live in an area that we get our internet from a co-op (South Slope) that does a wonderful job...I would love to have access to Google Fiber!

Okay so I did some more research, and apparently you have to sign up through the city to get conduit ran to your house/business. Looks like a free service install and will allow more than just google fiber.

That’s ******* awesome. I can only hope that WDM doing municipal fiber will push the rest of the metro to do the same

I have someone laying fiber in my backyard in Ankeny right now. But it is a subcontractor who is not sure the client. I assume it is CenturyLink, but who knows.

Yeah, i love the way WDM is doing it, in a way that'll allow future competition.

Would love to see Ankeny follow suit. With WDM getting google fiber, and a bunch of the other suburbs seeing mi-fiber roll out, Ankeny is kind of in a ****** place stuck with just mediacom (centurylink doesnt count as broadband)

Whaaaa? The CLink DSL Internet isn’t an option?

:jimlad:

Yeah, for some reason this isn't all that appealing. This is the max they offer me.

I think I remember having this level of speed from mediacom 20 years ago.

As much as I dislike Mediacom, I haven’t had any issues with their internet, and the speed has been just fine

WDM is not laying Google Fiber. They are installing a conduit network across the city to increase access and encourage competition for citizens. Huge win for WDM residents.

Google Fiber is the partner who will have their fiber lines first installed in the network. Mediacom is suing because they are pissed their monopoly over high speed internet in the city is coming to an end

They're currently building out MetroNet fiber in Johnston - I don't really know if that's considered a good option or not. We currently have CL's fiber & it works pretty good - always good to have more competition, though.

Ankeny could do something truly transformative like this, or it could just continue being years behind on infrastructure relative to its growth while bragging about how it drops its property tax rate by a nickel every year. Tough call.

They (Mediacom) are not doing a very good job. They're laying that fiber down quicker than crap. Burying lines right up to peoples houses as they go. Google is not screwing around.

Yep, they are laying conduit like crazy. I wonder if mediacom has backed off since the city is laying in the infrastructure for future competition.
