Anyone know of a (or own) a good farm pond for fishing with kids? Looking to take my boy fishing on Friday for some panfish.

I had good luck at Big Creek lake but the trails to get back there are a little too tricky for a 3 yr old.

Thanks!

I assume you are just wanting to get your line wet with your son and catch a few gill or whatever is hitting. Maybe try the ponds that are east of the spillway up at Saylorville? I think you can drive right up to them or at least easy to get too. I have not been back there for years, however, it might be a good spot close to Urbandale.

Also, may consider fishing the ponds at Jester Golf course from the park side. Someone on here may be able to advise if you can still do that.

Banner Pits between Indianola and DM. Waterworks park.

Yep, just looking to take him out and let him reel a few in. He probably won't last long so hopefully they are hitting.

Ponds east of spillway...time to check out Google maps.

If you head north on 35 and take the corporate woods exit and head east there will be a farm pond on the right. The farmer lets anyone fish there. I have caught bass and bluegill there before I moved. Good little pond for a bobber, you can pull in the driveway and park.

Sounds like what I'm looking for. I'll try and stop in ahead of time and check with the owner.

It'd be cool to be pulling in some bass while he can catch bluegill on the bobber.

I have caught a ton of nice little pan fish at Easter Lake on the southeast side of DSM. Lots of nice shore fishing, much easy access.

Easter lake is real easy. Actually, there are two or three REALLY easy spots on Big Creek. I lived in Polk City and fished there every day for three or four summers, and there are two or three spots that are handicap accessible, let alone, for a 3 year old kid who is healthy. You can definitely find a good spot there. Either one would be great. I love fishing with kids so that is awesome. Hope you guys have a great time and beautiful day to do it.

Maffit lake just sw of Des Moines is a good spot also, they have a couple of docks that are nice to fish off of. The last time I went there with my son we caught several panfish using nitecrawlers. Also just sw of maffit is Badger Creek, some nice bass come out of that lake.

I will second Moffitt Lake, off of Highway 5 right near I-35. Plenty of good and easy spots.

You might also try DMACC west on Grand Ave (West Des Moines) or even the one in Ankeny.

Good luck!

When you want to try to some double top secret places, let me know...I have a couple!
