I bought a new Explorer in November, been very happy with it (first american made car i have purchased). It gets 20-21 on the highway. I got the sport version which was close to $50K (sticker, not actual purchase), but you can get nice one in the 30's and probably get a 1-2 year old one in the 20's.

Funny - the new Explorer is the one vehicle in the Ford lineup right now that I DON'T like. The front end just doesn't do it for me, which is sad because if they made it look more like the Edge it would be nearly perfect - except the Edge is too small for us - which pretty much rules out the Terrain.

We'll probably end up going with a used Acadia when it's time to buy the "mommy truck".

We have a 2012 Terrain SLT2. It is our 2nd Terrain and we like it. It rides smooth and is very comfortable. The gas mileage is 20-22 mpg.We are going to sell it or trade very soon as we want a smaller vehicle with better gas mileage.

so the mpg is bad? should i look for another brand?
The 4 cylinder FWD is rated 22 32
The 4 cylinder AWD is rated 20 28
The 6 cylinder is rated about 16 22 if I remember correctly.

I have the 4 cylinder FWD and am getting about 20.5 all in town. Only has 500 miles so I don't have a real good overall opinion on mileage yet. In April I will be driving down to Warsaw, Mo so I will get a better idea on highway mileage plus it is still breaking in.

Does the 4 cylinder have some get up and go or is it a "0-60 in a half hour" vehicle?

The Terrain has a towing capacity all of 3,500 pounds. The Acadia can tow 5,200 pounds but looks too much like a minivan. Really wish they wouldn't have canned the Trailblazer.

Here is why

GMC Yukon
Front Headroom 40.3 inches
Rear Headroom 39.2
Front Leg Room 41.3
Rear Leg Room 39
16mpg combined
$50K not even loaded

After 3 years this same vehicle is worth $32,500 according to KBB

Honda CRV
Front Headroom 40.3 inches Same
Rear Headroom 38.6 .6 inches less
Front Legroom 41.3 Same
Rear Leg Room 38.3 .7 inches less
25 MPG combined
Completed loaded w/nav $31K

After 3 years this same vehicle is worth $22,800 according to KBB

This is why

The Yukon is a nicer vehicle. It will ride better and is bigger but it's at least $20k more. It's like comparing a Toyota Camry to a Lexus GS350

.
You also dont need 3 parking spots to park it.

I have a 2012 6 cylinder. It gets around 21 mpg with a good mix of city and highway miles. Back seat has great leg room and the seat can be moved forward and backward. I picked the Terrain because it is one of the only mid size SUVs that doesn't look like it should be driven by Clones21's mom.

If you're really worried about gas mileage and you have to have an SUV, I've heard the Mazda CX-5 gets really good gas mileage but it comes at the cost of performance. If you really want performance and gas mileage stop being like everyone else and get a wagon.

The Terrain is NOT a mid sized SUV. GMC mid size suv is the Acaidia. The Terrain is classified as a compact suv.

I've never understood what people like about mid-size suvs...they are pretty close to what a full size costs and normally don't get any better gas mileage. Plus you have next to little leg room inside them...just my opinion though. I've had a Yukon and an escalade and I loved them both.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Terrian (and other similar compact/crossover SUVs) are built on car chassis vs truck chassis (like full-sized SUV's) meaning they ride better. i.e...more like a car vs a truck. I realize I risk being a decade or so behind the times, but at least I believe that used to be one of the big differences.

I love the look of the Terrian for the same reason my wife hated it. It is masculine looking. We opted instead for its cousin, the Chevy Equinox.
