This is what I was going to say. Michael Myers roamed around in broad daylight. That was always really unsettling for me. Everything else scary, up to that point, movie-wise, happened at night. Halloween changed that.

I remember being TERRIFIED of Freddy when I was, like, 7. My biological dad used to play the video to "Dream Warriors" by Dokken just to terrorize me.
Oh my gosh, to this day. Unfortunately my connotation is not incredibly positive!
Not the scariest thing by far, but I remember being scared crap-less by one of the first scenes in ET. He jumps out of a field or something.
I wasn't born when the movie came out, but I think I saw it when I was maybe 5 or 6 years old.
The rest of the movie was fine, just that one scene!
