My other favorite actor, Jimmy Stewart, starred in Rear Window and the Glenn Miller Story in 1954.

Thanks so much to @cyclones500 for another great idea! Can you think of any actors who played notable/varied roles in 2 or more movies released the same year?

For example, one of my favorite years in Brad Pitt's career was 1995, when he was in both Se7en and 12 Monkeys. (Apparently a lot of numbers in titles that year.)

Who are some of yours?

Holly Hunter in The Firm and The Piano

Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I'm Not There.

Jamie Foxx in Collateral and Ray

Julianne Moore in The Hours and Far From Heaven

Fun Fact for the above mentioned: All were nominated for Oscars for both roles in their given year

Amy Adams in Nocturnal Animals and Arrival

Philip Seymour Hoffman in Synechdoche, New York and Doubt

Robert DeNiro in Heat and Casino

Tom Cruise in Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut

Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and Home Alone

Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant

Testifying
Tom Hanks a few times:
84 Splash and Bachelor Party
89 The Burbs and Turner and Hooch
93 Sleepless in Seattle and Philadelphia
95 Apollo 13 and Toy Story
98 Saving Private Ryan and You’ve Got Mail
02 Road to Perdition and Catch Me If You Can
04 Lady Killers and Polar Express

There are other years where he’s had more than one good movie but the list above are all good IMO.

Think if Forrest Gump (94) was in that 95 year. Wow.

Honestly, the winner of this question in terms of quality of movies and their performance has to be John Cazale. In 1974 he had big roles in both The Conversation and Godfather Part II.

Smaller actor that is getting more and more roles is Domhall Gleeson. He was in The Revenant, Brooklyn, and Ex Machina in 2015

Tom Hardy is a nice pickup there. I thought he was much better than Leo in The Revenant.

Surprise nobody combed through Samuel L.'s IMDB page for this one...

1993 -- Jurassic Park and True Romance

2004 -- Kill Bill: Vol. 2 and The Incredibles

2012 -- The Avengers and Django Unchained

2014 -- Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Kingsmen: The Secret Service

I am just going to screen capture his 2019...

I almost used him for 1993 but his role in True Romance is literally 30 seconds long so I didn't.

Inadvertently posted this in the "FOT: Nailed It" thread (I deleted that post).

Joan Cusack
You could call her a “career supporting actress," but she's had some big years for mid-level critical acclaim. Also, I tend to like her performance in most roles I've seen.

1988
Stars and Bars*
Married to the Mob
Working Girl

1997
Grosse Pointe Blank
A Smile Like Yours*
In & Out

Not to be overlooked: Geek Girl #1, "Sixteen Candles."

*I have not watched these
